.
We woke up to another glorious sunrise last week.
.

.
But as I was standing on the back deck taking pictures, I noticed something to the left.
.

.
In front of the woodshed.
.

.
We have a few morning skunks nibbling under the bird feeders now and then and they often scurry into the shed if they spot me.
But this one wasn’t scurrying.
😰
I’m going to issue a warning now.
This poor little guy was dead, and since we love our backyard visitors like family … and I’ve never been close enough to touch a skunk…. I did that morning. I also took pictures, which might be disturbing.
So again, here’s my warning.
Dead animal photos to follow.
Please leave now if you find it distressing.

Skunks don’t live very long in the wild. On average only two to four years. And since we didn’t see any signs of injury, we’re guessing it was just this sweet little fellow’s time.
.

.
He looked very peaceful. As if he simply laid down and went to sleep.
.

.
I like to think the beautiful sunrise helped him on his way.
.

.
❤️

I’ve never seen an uninjured animal deceased in plain sight like that.

It’s the first time we’ve had one die that close. Which, considering all the visitors we have… is odd.

Yeah, makes you wonder what he ate. Maybe something toxic to skunks.

We’re very careful not to have anything poisonous around our house, but you never know how far they wander.

Rest in peace, little skunk. ❤️

Husband buried him in the back, by the woods.

😢 Awwe. It definitely looked like it was the skunks time to go. I didn’t know how long they lived until you said. So, I was surprised by how many years they only live up to.

RIP little guy. Very sad 💔 I had to remove a bunny that had been hit my a car in front of our house last week.

Breaks my heart every time.

Poor little buddy! At least he died in a beautiful place with lovely humans who welcome animals.

I like to think it was his time and he picked a place he felt safe.

Sad. But at least it was a peaceful, non-violent death. Not all animals get that.

Exactly.
I was sad to see it, but he did look peaceful.

Oh, this made me sad. But what a peaceful little place he chose for his final resting spot, surrounded by nature and beneath that beautiful sunrise. 💜

i hope he died peacefully. Though as someone else mentioned it is strange he did so in the open. I too wondered about poison or even rabies. but he does look too peaceful for either of those. So let’s just hold that it was an easy leaving for whatever reason.

I hope so.
That’s what it looked like…

They really are. Great for the garden too as they eat a lot of bugs and pests.

That is a solemn way to start a day. I hope there are no more surprises like that!

First time it’s happened since we moved in 25 years ago.

I’ve noticed that most of my younger raccoons are suddenly appearing without their moms. Probably just time for them to be on their own, but I worry about them.
Did the skunk’s scent sack get released? I’ve wondered about that with natural death.

No. Not at all. No smell.

We found a very large, and very dead, possum in our yard a couple of years ago. I too buried him. Death stinks (though for your black and white fella, a little less so than usual).

We see opossums every once in a while but not very often. And always at night.

My first clue was seeing him in our yard in broad daylight. I figured that wasn’t a good sign.
