Getting my husband to a movie theater is a rarity these days. While I’d be happy to see a weekly film on the big screen my other half complains about the concession prices, the endless pre show commercials and God forbid he doesn’t get to sit in the back row. But last night I convinced him.

And we saw what might turn out to be the largest grossing movie of all time. I’m not a huge Tom Cruise fan, but if you liked Top Gun you’ll love the sequel. The fighter jet aerial sequences are stunning and the movie does a nice job paying homage to the original. Val Kilmer makes a poignant appearance and the story line of Goose’s resentful son is well played. Granted the new beach football isn’t as good as the volleyball scene from decades past… but not much is. Overall Maverick brings it and even my theater cranky spouse was glad he went.

Sadly we couldn’t say the same for J. R. Maxwells, the restaurant in Bath where we had dinner afterwards.

I admit their cocktails were potent AF, one Cosmo and one margarita about did me in.
A loaf of homemade bread was a nice way to start.

But it went downhill from there.

My minuscule cup of clam chowder contained roughly 4 spoonfuls and my husband’s French Onion soup was weak and flavorless.

The salad I didn’t photograph had some decent blue cheese dressing but the pan seared scallop carbonara that sounded wonderful turned out to be an anemic platter of bland goop. I often wonder if we’re too critical when it comes to eating out. We’ve added this place to our won’t ever return list… and that list is getting longer by the day.

That was actually a picture of an advertising postcard. The restaurant was packed.

Eating out has gotten outrageously expensive. But then so is a trip to the grocery store.

I don’t think your too critical, you pay good money and expect great cuisine for it. Your in Maine and your expectation of the quality of seafood is high. So, no your not being critical. And thanks for the review of the film without giving away spoilers, lol.

The movie is a fun romp. You know what you’re getting when you walk in so it doesn’t disappoint. A bit corny, but so was the original.

We have noticed that a few of the places we liked to eat at over the years have slacked off. I think it’s a hangover from the pandemic. At least, I hope so. I’ve never understood the appeal of Tom Cruise.

No, I usually avoid Tom. But he’s good in this and I always like the original so there some nostalgia there.

My list of ‘don’t go to again’ restaurants is a lot longer than ‘must’ and do go to again list!
Both ‘Top Guns’ are not my type of film but I do like Cruise and both movies were easy to sit through!

I’ve only heard great things about the movie. Like your husband, I’m not a fan of GOING to the movies when I can enjoy them on my couch in a few weeks. 🙂

But some movies have to be experienced on the big screen. That’s why Cruise held it back from being released for two years. F-18 fighter scenes don’t pack the same punch on your couch.

I enjoyed TG: Maverick, too. Just rewatched the original this past weekend (watched the movies in reverse order) and frankly, I like the new one better than the original.

I watched Maverick with my pilot husband yesterday. So good! I loved the obvious homage to the Star Wars death star attack plans. One of my favorite sayings when I’m out adventuring and something could go seriously wrong is “stay on target” when Luke is going in for the miracle shot. I was beyond thrilled when that line made it into Maverick 💖

*sigh* I know. Me too…. Now it feels like a big merchandising machine. I’m glad I saw the original in the theatres when I was 7. Nothing more magical than that.
