.
This is the road you have to drive if you visit the White Mountains.
.

.
The Notch was famous for The Old Man in the Mountain, a natural stone outcropping that resembled a face. Sadly, it crumbled years ago but there’s a museum devoted to it at the Canon Mountain gondola sight where you can grab a glimpse.
.

.
Peak foliage was long past when we drove through and everything looked very grey.
.

.
But it’s still an impressive sight.
.

.
And a huge tourist destination.
.

.
This was the road the day we drove it. Below was the road two weeks before…
.

.
There’s something to be said for traveling off season. No traffic jams for us.
.
.
Not as colorful, but definitely smoother sailing.
.

.
Never a dull moment…
.
Oh, that traffic. It is a beautiful drive, though.

It’s stunning with the full foliage, but not worth that traffic jam.

Ugh…..tourists. Glad you got the road all to yourself.

We’ve driven through there when the foliage is turning, and though it’s glorious…. it’s also a nightmare of leaf peepers.

Me and mountain pass roads are not good friends.

They can be a challenge.

I was expecting a picture from the museum. I was wondering if that was where my long-vanished grandfather disappeared to. He left for work one day and never came home, leaving my grandmother with 8 kids to bring up on her own. (If only my male parent would have followed in his father’s bootsteps!)

I did a blog series about Canon Mountain and the museum a few years ago, but we didn’t visit this time around. As for your grandmother, I can’t even imagine that hardship.

She eventually found a very nice man who was willing to take on her 8 kids (not sure how many were still at home) but like every woman, she coped when she had to.

That traffic jam shot is the poster for why one has to plan a vacation to New England during peak leaf peepin’ season. Off-season, it shall be!

It’s virtually impossible to plan ahead for peak foliage season. So many variable affect the change. The color was two weeks early this year…

Holy crap. I’ll take grey over being stuck in traffic like that!

Very glad we missed that. It’s a total bottleneck, once you’ve committed to that road you’re stuck the the duration.
