We’ll be back to Baxter.

.

The husband and I found a (not so new, but new to us) brewery in Lewiston recently.

.

.

Baxter brewing is housed in the old Bates mill complex …

.

.

And has a fabulous tasting room space.

.

.

I love when companies repurpose old buildings. This was a hydro powered textile mill back in the day and if you look closely in the far corner of that picture you’ll see a raw rock wall. During heavy rain storms it weeps… wear waterproof shoes if you sit there.

.

.

The beer?

Yeah, there’s lots of it on tap.

.

.

That chocolate orange stout?

Primo!

.

.

They also have a full bar and since I’m a sucker for fresh herbs in my cocktails…

.

.

I sampled the thyme after thyme mule with pear and lime ginger beer. Yum!

.

.

At the bar we spied an outdoor mural we missed on the way in.

.

.

Along with the beer?

Food.

.

.

Sadly it wasn’t as good as the booze.

The husband’s French onion soup was sent back because it was basically just a bowl of soggy bread.

.

.

My dumplings were tasty but a bit overdone with hard edges.

.

.

The generator that powered the mill.

It’s massive and would have cost a fortune to remove so they just painted it and left it in place.

.

.

The husband liked his chicken tenders, though I thought the coating was too heavy and too dry.

.

.

I should have known better than to order a smash burger… I don’t usually like them as they’re thin and well done… but the bartender said the maple honey cream sauce was amazing so I took the plunge.

Sauce aside, it was a dry hockey puck.

Am I the only one who hates this smash perfectly good meat to smithereens trend?

.

.

Poor pub food aside, the atmosphere and beer were good enough to warrant a return trip.

.

.

We’ll just order something it’s harder to screw up. Like nachos, or salad.

.

.

😊

.

Ebenezer’s did not disappoint.

.

As I said in my last post, if you visit Ebenezer’s you won’t be disappointed. Unless you’re a beer hating wretch who prefers eating at McDonalds. And if you are, please take your bad taste elsewhere. I don’t have room in my life for that kind of negativity.

Ebenezer’s is not a large establishment and seating at the bar is limited.

.

.

But oh what a bar it is. With hovering vultures and hand blown glass beer taps.

.

.

The bar area is small but filled with unusual beer signs. I’m unfamiliar with this brew, but there are ostriches involved… so I’m firmly on board.

.

.

Decor aside, one look at the impressive draught list will make you an instant devotee.

.

.

We lucked out and visited at the beginning of their annual Belgian festival and may I just say? It was delightful. My choice for the afternoon?

A Hanssens OUDE GUEUZE LAMBIC. 5.8% – Strong tart and funky, notes of earthy wood, apple and grass $14.

Yes, grass.

.

.

I drank green beer and loved it. And it wasn’t even St. Patrick’s Day. Smooth, herbal, with just a slight pucker. Consider me a fan. I liked it so much I didn’t even try anything from their second page, except ….

.

.

Did you see it?

.

.

A beer that will invert your penis? Who could say no to a taste of that!

They brought me a shot glass full because it’s quite potent. The taste? Oddly sweet and more reminiscent of whisky than beer. I liked it, the husband hated it. But then I don’t have invertible genitals so that may be understandable.

To be continued…

.

A flea market bust but a brew pub win.

.

My husband heard about a large flea market in Fryeburg , Maine… and since the 90 minute drive did not deter him, over to the western part of the state we went.

.

.

There was indeed a flea market, but that’s the only good thing I can say about it. Yes, there were a few antiques scattered here and there… but mostly it was tacky new merchandise. Like this:

.

.

Clearly Barbie has reached menopause age.

It was hot as hell that day with no breeze whatsoever and that made me cranky. The only thing that made me smile?

.

.

Martian chauffeurs.

.

.

After a few fruitless hours of my husband searching for treasure and me searching for shade, we left empty handed. And since it was well past lunchtime and I’d worked up a terrible thirst.. there was only one place to go. The penultimate brew pub.

.

.

If you don’t know where it is, you’ll never find it… tucked away down a narrow wooded residential road, alongside a golf course in a quiet town near the border of New Hampshire called Lovell .

.

.

The barn is the pub, and there’s outdoor seating as well.

.

.

If you’ve never heard of Ebenezer’s? Good. That means more beer for me.

.

.

But if you live in New England, chances are you know this award winning shrine to suds. A visit there never disappoints.

To be continued….

.

Random thoughts.

.

Climate change. Pollution. Drought. Shrinking natural resources. Deforestation.

.

.

Healthy living my ass. Keep your kale and quinoa, Keith will survive nuclear winter.

.

.

Sigh. If only I had a few million to spare.

I actually have not so fond memories of this place. Oh, it was beautiful and swank… but it also happened to be the day I realized I’d become allergic to lobster. I ate it for lunch and by the time we stopped here with friends for a drink in the evening? I ordered a margarita, took one sip and spent half an hour in the ladies room throwing up. Good times.

Not.

.

.

Say it isn’t so!

😫

.

.

A flight we did at a veteran owned brewery called Stars and Stripes. Appropriate, no?

.

.

Keith.

You know he’ll be here even after the cockroaches are extinct.

.

Gettin’ my beer on…..

Beer.

We love it, and seek it out on a regular basis.

So when we find a new craft brewery?

Apparently Brickyard Hollow has been open for almost a year and how we never noticed it is a mystery.

IMG_E5384

Perhaps because the building used to be a 7-11?

IMG_5385

Whatever the reason, I’m glad we know now.

IMG_5371

There’s a rustic modern decor… which includes those horribly uncomfortable metal chairs that are popping up everywhere.

For the rounded hipped among us? This is not good.

IMG_5374

Uncomfortable outdoor seating as well.

IMG_5373

But the appropriate vintage photographs provide a relaxing atmosphere…

And then there’s the beer.

IMG_5377

Bring on the flights!

IMG_5378

We tried the Belgian, the Trestle, the Blueberry and the Amber and they were all lovely. After ordering some full size glasses,  I discovered the cocktail menu.

IMG_5375

Which had a boozy Lime Rickey.

Of course Yarmouth is a town famous for it’s annual Clam Festival. And when you’re at the Clam Festival? You have to meet the Clam…

IMG_0257

And have a freshly squeezed non alcoholic Lime Rickey… they’re delicious.

But a boozy version?

THANK-YOU-FROM-THE-BOTTOM------------------OF-MY-HEART

It’s simple, crisp, refreshing…. and filled with gin.

IMG_5380

What more could you want?

Happy as the proverbial clam, I moved on to the food.

IMG_5381

Rich creamy clam chowder with just the right amount of everything.

Husband went for Blueberry Moonshine wings while I chose a Black and Blue burger and country fries.

IMG_5382

While the burger was too thin for my taste, and slightly overcooked…. it did have a fabulous charbroiled flavor and potent Gorgonzola. The fries were dusted with some kind of slightly spicy rub which I could easily have munched on all day.

So…

Brickyard Hollow rates a solid B.

I look forward to going back and trying Key Lime Scallops, a Cuban and a Crab Cake burger.

And of course… more beer.
