There’s a famous restaurant in my part of the world called The Taste of Maine.
.

.
It’s been family owned and operated for 44 years and is a staple for fresh seafood on the heavily travelled coastal Route 1. Tourists love the kitschy decor and giant outdoor lobsters.
.

.
We find it a bit overpriced but go once in a while just because it’s fun.
The pandemic hit a lot of seasonal restaurants hard up here and many went under. Right now they’re struggling to find enough wait staff. So when I saw this on FB the other day? A customer tipping the amount of the bill….
.

.
I was floored.
We’ve done that at small diners and sandwich shops. $20 – $30 bill, $20 -$30 tip.
But an $800 tip?
Holy macaroni. That’s beyond awesome.
❤️

I’m presuming tips are taxable income in America. They are in Canada. A tip that size will mostly end up in government coffers. It’s right on the receipt.
Note to tippers: to really reward your server, leave the tip in cash, and put it right in the server’s hands. Then they know it is for them, and the government has no way to track it. (And if you don’t have the cash on hand, get his or her name and mail a cheque in that name to the server c/ò the restaurant. Tell them to expect a little something in the mail.)

While I agree with you I know from experience by NOT declaring tips Social Security when you need it is not there!!! Question is do you want the money when you are young or when you are old?

I never suggested not declaring tips, what I said was, especially for huge tips, not declaring the whole amount. What a person declares is up to them, but a basic 10 – 15% is credible. Not even the IRS expects that a server is going to be given a 100% tip, Something like that should be shared between associated workers, but not the government. (And, in this day and age, who knows if they are going to grow old, or if old age pensions will still be around. That’s Socialism, after all!)

Yes, that would be ideal. But it was still an awesome gesture.

I’m not complaining. It must be nice to afford such a tip.

In Florida, that roof contraption would be 29 blocks away five minutes into a hurricane.

Man, I’d at least ask for one of the claws off the kitschy decor if I were leaving that kind of tip.
