Saying goodbye to the boneyard and quirky Edisto.

.

Thought I was done with the Boneyard Beach photos?

.

.

Almost…

.

.

I promise.

.

.

But who could resist framing their spouse in driftwood?

.

.

Making our way back to the path, I snapped my last photos.

.

.

.

.

And my husband joined in the odd shell placement tradition…

.

.

Trying to balance one on the sign.

.

.

Success.

.

.

Exiting through the marsh …

.

.

We climbed back in the ungodly expensive rental behemoth…

.

.

Of which my husband had become entirely too enamored.

It was late afternoon of our last day of vacation so we took a leisurely drive around Edisto Island and enjoyed some of its quirks.

.

.

No one knows who erected this odd marsh angel but apparently she changes with the seasons and has become a local favorite.

.

.

This is the only acceptable answer to the question what do I do with dead palm tree stumps?

Hula girls, that’s what.

.

.

We drove past this native while on the main beach road.

.

.

It was a wonderful sight so I made my husband turn around and circle by him twice to ensure decent photos.

.

.

A poo covered jacket seems a small price to pay for such a beautiful friend.

.

.

This bottle display is an old Gullah way of driving out evil spirits. They have to be blue, but sorry… for the life of me I don’t remember why. The Clemson tiger paw is a modern addition.

.

.

Remember the herd of tiny deer we saw every night? I wondered where they could possibly live in so busy an area…

.

.

The answer was our resort’s golf course.

.

.

Where they clearly didn’t read the sign.

😉

.

Deer, dolphins, turtles, rogue sand, a parking miscalculation and me.

.

Returning to the condo after Boneyard Beach, we met the nightly herd of neighborhood deer.

.

.

They wander the area at will, not the least bit scared of cars or people.

.

.

Southern deer are much smaller than the ones we’re used to seeing up north.

To me these are basically large dogs.

.

.

We wondered where they slept in this area… it’s a beach after all, crowded with houses and very little undeveloped woods.

Did I mention we had dolphins in front of our resort twice a day? Two hours before high tide and two hours before low. They follow and drive the fish and we loved seeing them frolic.

Of course every time I tried to film them they stopped. Pay close attention here and you’ll see one break the surface.

.

.

And speaking of sea creatures, Edisto Island is all about the turtles.

.

.

Brightly painted and prominently displayed.

.

.

Some of them were quite creative.

.

.

On the main drag?

.

.

The sand seemed to be gaining ground.

.

.

And every time we drove by this rental house? We laughed.

.

.

Oops. Major parking dimension miscalculation there.

.

.

Another balcony selfie, slightly squinty as I was looking into the sun.

😉

.

Of fog and wooly bears.

.

We had a really warm week in Maine with temps hitting the lower 80’s. Not my idea of fall, but lots of people were thrilled summer is still hanging on.

With cool nights and warm days comes fog.

.

.

So much fog the deer who usually only show up at dusk are here at dawn.

.

.

This next picture is of a poor starling who smashed into our living room picture window.

.

.

He was okay and eventually flew away after recovering from the shock. But he sure drove our cat crazy.

.

.

Yes, people here still believe caterpillars can predict the weather.

.

.

Looks like a mild winter to me.

.

Have you herd…?

.

Our backyard has been pretty busy of late.

.

.

And our resident herd of ten are showing up every night.

.

.

They don’t usually visit when it’s still light enough to grab photos, so this was a treat.

.

.

You can have television. I’ll happily sit and watch these beautiful creatures instead.

.

.

The harem master.

.

.

I’m so glad he made it through hunting season unscathed.

.

.

In case you’re wondering why they’re called White Tailed Deer.

😉

.

Winter visitors.

.

Our resident herd is back.

.

.

I hadn’t seen them in a while but they came tromping across the back yard looking for a snack early enough the other evening for me to grab a few pics.

.

.

There were 8 total. Does, youngsters…

.

.

And the harem master… who honestly, is a bit of an ass. No one else is allowed to eat until he’s had his share.

.

.

Except this brave little fellow…

.

.

❤️

.

Hell of a way to end the day.

.

After checking into our resort there was still daylight left to burn,,,, so we jumped in the car for a scenic drive.

.

.

Being Vermont, you can’t go far without seeing a covered bridge and this one was right down the road.

.

.

The Grist Mill Bridge, built in 1872.

.

.

And to the right of the bridge?

.

.

Grist Mill Park.

.

.

If you’re wondering where the grist mill is? Join the club, so were we.

.

.

And as the sun was setting, we drove.

.

.

No particular destination in mind, just enjoying the scenery and the oh so very green grass.

.

.

Untouched photo. The fields really were that green. A pleasant respite from the awful brown summer we had in Maine.

.

.

Gentle rain started to fall as it got dark and we turned back toward the resort. It’s a good thing the husband was driving because on one of the twisty turny mountain roads, on a corner, in the dark, in the rain… it happened. A full grown deer darted out right in front of us. Thankfully the husband’s reflexes were good, and thankfully no one was coming in the opposite direction. He swerved just enough so we didn’t have a deer come through the windshield, but it hit my car’s right front bumper with an awful thwack. We stopped. The deer ran off and seemed to be okay. My car? Not so much.

.

.

The husband managed to push the panel back in place, but it was cracked in numerous places and the fog light housing was smashed.

.

.

It could have been soooo much worse. But good grief, it was a helluva way to start a vacation.
