White Mountains trip… Day 7. The beginning of the end.

On the 7th and final full day of our trip, the husband woke up and said no more hiking, climbing and jumping rocks.

Or rather his back did…

thing

So we did what any (not so) able bodied tourists would do…

We had a long lazy breakfast…

And resort hopped the day away.

IMG_8242

Our first stop was a brand new place perched at the bottom of Mount Washington.

IMG_8232

While it didn’t look like much from the front, the views out back were wide open.

IMG_8231

With a large deck…

IMG_8226

Ample seating, and a fire pit to take it all in.

IMG_8227

Inside there was a nice dining room..

IMG_8218

Filled with old photos…

IMG_8219

And history of the area.

IMG_8221

IMG_8220

But it was the lounge and bar that drew our attention.

(You’re shocked, I know.)

IMG_8196

It had my kind of moose head mounted over the mantle…

IMG_8199

And a wall of windows…

IMG_8202

That made for a damn near perfect spot to drink.

IMG_8213

So we drank.

(You’re surprised, I know.)

IMG_8197

My Thyme In Mumbai please…

IMG_8205

Yes, I believe that tasted like another one.

IMG_8207

The bartender/waitress was a hoot and had us sample a new hard cider by North Country called Squashed. I’m not a fan of all that pumpkin spiced crap but this was heavenly. Light, crisp with delicate undertones… I was hooked. Until I researched it and realized you could only buy it by visiting their tasting room.

Future road trip itinerary – check!

Thinking it might be a good idea to have some food to soak up the alcohol, I opted for a crab cake that was the size of a large saucer and pure crab. It was sublime.

IMG_8209

Tomato bisque for the husband.

IMG_8210

Which was small, but delightfully rich and creamy.

IMG_8211

Bacon wrapped pan seared sea scallops for him…

IMG_8212

Grilled chicken club wrap for me.

Good bye diet.

IMG_8203

We soaked in the wall of windows a little longer…

IMG_8230

Then headed out….

IMG_8236

To resort #2.

(You’re welcome food people. Breakfast and lunch!)

White Mountain trip Day 3… Random scenery.

No, the vacation series isn’t over yet, I just thought I’d give you a few days break.

Leaving the Sculptured Rocks geological site, we drove through the Cockermouth Forest.

Yes. I swear….

We did.

IMG_7371

I’m reasoning that Cocker Spaniels are bird retrieval dogs, and therefor have tender mouths.

Yes.

That’s my explanation… and I’m sticking to it.

We headed back to our resort through Franconia Notch which was starkly devoid of leaves.

IMG_7389

IMG_7391

And went through the town of Carroll, where moose are clearly being held prisoner.

IMG_7392

The Mount Washington valley still had snow..

IMG_7394

And loomed majestic.

IMG_7396

Back in the Bethel/Newry area, we regained the foliage.

IMG_7374

And headed for beer.

IMG_7400

Sunday River brewery is a large restaurant and pub that seemed to be packed with locals and tourists alike every night. We did a flight, and weren’t overly impressed with the quality…. so I switched to an Apple Smash, which was a wonderful concoction whose list of ingredients I don’t recall. But there were copious amounts of apple Crown Royal…

And isn’t that really all you need to know?

IMG_7401

Seeing that I love soft bar pretzels and the husband doesn’t, I ordered some for my appetizer.

IMG_7402

Holy Mother of God! Served with warm blue cheese beer sauce, they were absolutely the best I’ve ever had. I instantly forgave them their lousy beer and planned on filling a dump truck with these and riding off into the sunset.

IMG_7403

Husband had a tasty salad..

IMG_7404

And we both had the baked haddock, which sadly was dry and uninteresting.

Back at our resort for the night, we opted for the stairs instead of the elevator and were bombarded by yet another section of hideous carpet.

IMG_8253

Christ, if that doesn’t give you nightmares…

Nothing will.

White Mountains trip…Day 2. Mount Washington Valley and Jackson Village.

After our moose sighting, we set out through the Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire.

267

We’ve done Washington many times and this trip we were just passing through…

275

It was a crisp and clear 64 degrees down below…

289

But she already had a 4 inch dusting of snow.

279

Not yet, thank you very much.

I’ll stay down below where it’s warmer and greener.

302

Next stop?

Jackson N.H….. where they’re famous for their falls. They’re a little hard to find but when you see houses with backyards like this –

304

You know you’re getting close.

294

Along the way, the husband was fascinated by an early snow plow….

296

But I told him keep walking…. it won’t fit in the barn.

306

We headed down a path looking for the falls….

308

And found a few rocks…

307

With a wedding venue set up alongside. A sign said the public was invited, and to feel free to come as you are.

You have to love New England.

311

Still looking for the falls, we backtracked, and walked up a steep sidewalk past a very pink cottage.

313

And found more rocks.

Some running water….

382

And the soon to be married couple…

379

Taking some wedding portraits with an interesting backdrop.

And finally,  the bottom of the falls….
