Birds, flowers and our dying view…

.

It’s starling time again at Casa River.

.

.

In the spring and early fall they descend…

.

.

In very large numbers.

.

.

And clean out our bird feeders in no time flat.

Summer may be over, but my flowers have had a miraculous resurgence.

.

.

Everything is in full bloom and looking lovely.

.

.

I don’t know why…

.

.

But I’m not questioning, just enjoying.

.

.

Even my potted hibiscus is hanging in there with the cool nights.

.

.

Across the street… it’s all about the poles.

.

.

More poles get jackhammered in the ground everyday.

So many poles.

.

.

And the day I’m dreading draws ever closer.

.

.

Two 200 foot greenhouses will dominate the view from our kitchen window any day now…

.

.

And I am not a happy camper.

😫

.

Random rambling…

.

A few sunset photos for your viewing pleasure.

.

.

.

No real reason for the next one, it just made me laugh.

.

.

Fall in Maine means apples and pumpkins and above all… turning leaves.

This is our backyard, complete with deer.

.

.

I suffered a major loss recently when I discovered my absolutely favorite cocktail bar had gone belly up. The Blind Pig… with their amazing 10 page menu of creative alcoholic delights… has morphed into an Italian restaurant. Same owners, yes.

.

.

The decor is similar…

.

.

But the cocktail list pales in comparison.

.

.

The food was good…

.

.

The atmosphere pleasant…

.

.

But even the funky silver fish wine decanter can’t make up the loss of my beloved artisan cocktails.

😫

Speaking of food, I’m including this crab cake recipe so I don’t lose it.

.

.

If you try it before me, let me know.

.

This is what drives me crazy.

.

Work on the second wall of the shed extension was underway yesterday.

.

.

And another window was added.

.

.

As you can tell, I keep my distance. Any suggestions from me are met with a bruised male ego and annoyance that I’m questioning his carpentry skills.

.

.

Which, of course…

I am.

.

.

See that last remaining spot to be sided? It’s a funky little section that required careful measuring and cutting.

.

.

Which my husband never does.

.

.

It’s just easier to gerry rig the section with 3 different size pieces.

Sigh…

🥴

.

The whole fam damily.

.

Please excuse the quality of these photographs. I was shooting through windows at night and some have annoying reflections…. but four skunks and two raccoons are too good not to share.

.

.

We have nightly visitors like this all the time but every time I try to sneak outside for pictures they run off.

.

.

They don’t mind me flipping on the deck lights…

.

.

But as soon as they hear me, they’re gone.

.

.

You’d be surprised how fast a skunk can run.

.

.

Yes.

.

.

I love our backyard…

💕

.

And the shed doth groweth..

.

Work has resumed on the shed extension.

.

.

And it’s extended to contain two windows.

.

.

The wood siding was purchased from the same local man who provided the existing shed’s siding…

.

.

Problem is….the old siding was 8” wide and the new is 12”.

.

.

This bothers my husband not one iota…

.

.

But is apt to drive me crazy every time I look at it.

.

.

As does my spouse’s less than even board cutting.

.

.

‘Good enough’ has always been good enough for my man when it comes to building.

.

.

🥴

.

News you can’t use.

.

Even if you wanted to.

Trust me on this…

.

.

This is where we are as a nation. Or more specifically, Florida.

WTH?

.

.

Climate change deniers?

Sh*t just got real.

😳

.

.

I can’t even…

.

.

I post some pretty ridiculous things in this series, but… wow.

.

.

I fear for us as a species.

I really do.

.

.

The poor thing was just trying to escape the rubber mystery meat and wilted salad. You can’t blame a rodent for that…

.

Pearl continues to surprise.

.

It seems that my new car has an infinite bag of tricks which pop up at the oddest times.

.

.

She’s loaded with lots of nifty features like headlights that swivel and dim automatically, voice activated commands, and an automatic cell phone charging station as seen below.

.

.

No, I still haven’t figured out all her gadgets and geegaws… but I will tell you my favorite. It’s a game changer and once experienced? I’m afraid there’s no going back.

.

.

Cooling seats.

For a menopausal hot flashing woman of a certain age? This is pure gold.

My husband loves the heated steering wheel but for me it’s all about those lovely little holes in the front seats that provide blessed icy ventilation. Summer doesn’t seem quite so awful now.

(And no, that’s not dust on my screen… it’s a starry night background. We be fancy up in here.)

The other thing that tickles me about this vehicle is the plethora of safety messages that pop up.

When my husband swivels his head to scan a yard sale when driving? Pearl says “Keep your eyes on the road!”

When he was scouting something free on the curb while waiting behind a truck at a stop sign? Pearl said “Vehicle in front has moved!”

Husband thinks it’s annoying, I think it’s a riot.

When she announces, “Don’t bring home any more crap!” I may have to kiss her.

She’s only messaged once while I’ve been driving. I was playing with the gas mileage numbers and had taken my foot off the gas going down a hill to increase consumption. Apparently she thought I was falling asleep and said this:

.

.

Ya gotta love it.

.

.

The exterior door oopsie.

.

As previously reported, the new door is in and secure.

.

.

Though my husband’s faulty depth measurement raised its ugly head on the exterior.

.

.

Raw unfinished wood was showing on both sides…

.

.

Thankfully since he’ll be butting the thick stone siding next to it, a bit of pvc trim covers the mistake.

.

.

I usually get nervous when my husband has to mitre something…

.

.

But he did well this time around…

.

.

With only a few minor adjustments.

😊
