I’ve always loved bugs and insects, the bigger and weirder the better. My father used to swear he found a new variety in the garden every year and I believe it’s true. Their diversity is amazing.

That being said, you know I was thrilled when I found this little beauty in my flower bed the other day.

I think we’re down to four woodchucks now.

I haven’t seen six together for quite a while so I’m guessing momma finally booted some of their big butts out of the burrow.

Up close and personal.

The other day my husband went to the woodshed to pull out his garden cart and came back in the house shortly after.

“I think one of your woodchucks is hurt” he said.

That made me drop what I was doing and rush out back to find this:

Junior, momma chuck’s full grown offspring from last year.. the one who never left the nest, was wedged in between the cart, some wood and a few landscaping bricks.

Or was he?

I knelt down, spoke softly and determined he wasn’t stuck… just scared.

.

.

We backed off, hid around the corner and waited for 10 minutes but he wouldn’t move.

Wanting to get on with his chores the husband slowly pulled the cart out of the shed and bam!

Junior was off like a shot to hide under the deck.

Not hurt, just antisocial.

The one where His Lordship investigates the deck project…

Work has been progressing on the deck and the other day it was finally time for Lord Dudley Mountcatten to check things out.

.

He approached warily, and then took a detour.

.

.

To the stack of unused boards

.

.

And then to the stack of extra wood, which he promptly climbed on and knocked over scaring himself to death.

.

.

I laughed, so he jumped back on the deck boards and gave me the evil eye.

.

.

When he finally ascended to the half finished deck, he explored a bit…

.

.

And plopped.

We tend to do more sitting than walking on our outdoor excursions. His Lordship does not like to waste energy unnecessarily.

.

.

But when he’d had enough fresh air?

.

.

He paced back and forth in front of the door….

.

.

Not understanding why I wouldn’t jump across the divide to open it.

So instead…

.

.

He plopped, and seemed to approve of the new decking materials.

I performed a minor miracle last week and dragged my husband to the movie theater. This happens approximately once a year, so I have to choose carefully. And since I’m a history nerd? It wasn’t Barbie we went to see.

We’ve been having a lot of hot summer weather lately and with that comes late afternoon thunderstorms. With late afternoon thunderstorms comes high winds. With high winds comes the possibility of power outages… and that’s what happened recently just as I was sitting down to read. Not wanting to give up my book, I grabbed a large battery operated lantern and propped it up behind me on the couch.

Lord Dudley Mountcatten was not pleased.

.

.

Something new and strange had been added to his world.

.

.

And had to be thoroughly investigated.

.

.

After a full five minutes of stalking, sniffing and batting…

.

.

His Lordship made peace with the temporary lighting device.

Is nothing sacred?

Wild critters.

We love them, but damn.

This is our little kitchen porch, which is really just a covered landing.

.

.

In the corner there’s a stand on which I place potted plants every year. It’s usually well balanced with one begonia on the top and one begonia on the bottom. Until the woodchucks discovered the bottom flower and started nibbling…

.

.

Bottom flower was then moved to the middle shelf and middle shelf decorations were moved to the bottom.

.

.

Which was fine…

.

.

Until a chipmunk found the bird’s nest and decided he needed to deconstruct it.

And if that’s not bad enough?

.

.

Something has started using our man cave/Barn Mahal porch as a toilet.

WTH?

Drinking, with woodchucks.

It was a relatively cool evening…. and even though I won’t be comfortably perspiration free until the mercury drops and the snow falls…. the husband and I headed out to the Barn Mahal porch for an adult beverage.

.

.

I chose one of the local Wisconsin beers our neighbor brought back from her trip. And while the can was artfully decorated with birds in flight, the Central Waters brewing company’s mango wheat tasted nothing like mangoes and was a tad disappointing.

.

.

But the baby chuckers were on the move and we enjoyed their evening antics.

.

.

I believe there were five in this year’s litter…

.

.

Though it could be six because they’re everywhere you look.

.

.

With some of them head and shoulders above their siblings.

.

.
