Because my husband will always find someone to talk to… even if they aren’t there.

.

We’d been given a gift card for the Broad Arrow Tavern which is located inside the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport.

.

.

We’ve been many times before, some with good results, some with bad. It’s a lovely old place…

.

.

But on this day, shortly after new corporate owners had taken over operations… we found it lacking.

.

.

One admittedly decent cranberry margarita in, the husband decided the new menu was too small and contained nothing to satisfy his appetite so we headed down the road.

.

.

To the oh so pricey but usually delightful Tuscan Bistro…. where we always sit at the bar because the husband likes to chat with someone other than me.

.

.

I started with the strawberry sangria…

.

.

And a few tasty crab cakes.

.

.

Husband opted for Allagash White and savory meatballs.

.

.

Passion fruit lemon drop martini was up next… which was when I noticed a strange bottle behind the bar.

.

.

Dough ball? You know I had to ask.

The bartender said it was a cookie dough flavored whisky which sounded horrible, and after a sniff of the bottle I discovered it was just that. At this point the man sitting next to me said, “I used to be a dough ball in high school, maybe I should try it.” I laughed and as often happens at watering holes… we spent the next hour talking to him and his girlfriend. They were a lovely couple and I enjoyed the casual chatter while we ate.

.

.

A grilled chicken risotto with asparagus for me, which looked good but wasn’t.

.

.

And a glazed salmon with fingerling potatoes and garlic green beans for the husband, which didn’t look good but was.

I wasn’t going to order dessert… but it was shortly after we finished our meals that our new bar buddies noticed hubby’s USMC hat and the conversation turned to the military.

It was then I knew all was lost.

.

.

I ate my Tiramisu by myself as the man sitting next to me discovered his father (who lives in Florida) had served in the same place at the same time as my husband. While my guy was Force Recon in Quang Tri and Dong Ha, his father was a 46 pilot ferrying Marines in and out of the area. This lead to a rather long telephone call between the two Vietnam vets…. with me twiddling my thumbs at the bar alone after the couple moved on to greener pastures. It also found me silently cursing the Marine Corps hat that in one way or another always leads to this scenario.

😉

.

Barn (and bar!) news.

.

Continuing in the if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em paradigm, I gifted the husband some nice new pool sticks.

.

.

Canadian maple of various colors and weights.

.

.

I also gathered some of the military patches he’s had stuck in his drawer for years.

.

.

I’m trying to think of some way to display them… you know, a way that doesn’t involve sewing. Because my love only goes so far.

.

.

A few man cave appropriate books were dropped on the table…. and then –

.

.

Our bar building contractor showed up with the top of the bar.

.

.

I have to admit I was liking the 3 different shades of wood colors….

.

.

Until I realized that was the unfinished side. But after it was sanded down and smoothed, even the husband agreed it would need to be stained before the polyurethane.

Victory is mine!

.

.

And that called for a drink. Or a cocktail in a pretty can as the case may be.

Day 11….love notes, breakfast, a liquor store and last minute Christmas shopping in Colonial Williamsburg.

The eleventh day of our vacation started at our timeshare resort condo…

Where I found this:

IMG_1743

A note from the grandchild of our hearts.

Sorry… but there’s no way better way to start the day than that.

IMG_1755

Although biscuits and gravy with home fries comes close.

We had a full day of Christmas gift shopping ahead of us and needed hearty sustenance. And in the south?

IMG_1752

That includes the options of scrapple, fried catfish, grits or bologna and eggs.

The husband’s utterly favorite breakfast is chipped beef on toast and he rarely finds it in Maine… so when we stumbled on the Southern Pancake and Waffle House in Williamsburg?

IMG_1753

He wanted to go every morning…. which we pretty much did from then on.

IMG_1754

But hey, there were chickens in every window so how could we lose?

Our first stop that day was a liquor store in anticipation of our upcoming Christmas Day in North Carolina.

For future reference…. the first way to tell you’re in a liquor store in the south?

IMG_1756

There’s a still.

Still searching for that silly wine filter, I thought we could try Merchant’s Square…. which is the shopping section of Colonial Williamsburg I couldn’t get the husband to check out the previous week.

IMG_1764

As with all areas there, it was lovely.

IMG_1767

Filled with interesting high end shops… like this interior design place.

IMG_1766

Giant double diamond ring light fixture anyone…?

IMG_1772

We happily strolled aroiund, ducking in and out of the stores with all the other desperate  Holy crap it’s Christmas Eve and I don’t have a gift!   shoppers.

Naturally I had to buy a souvenir tee shirt –

IMG_1848

Truer words were ne’er spoke.

IMG_1768

And towards late afternoon when my stomach started grumbling?

This happened.

IMG_1769

Someone saw the husband’s Marine Corps hat, said Semper Fi, and they were off….

IMG_1771

On a 38 minute long conversation about who was stationed where, when and with whom.

Yes. I timed it….

While he talked?

IMG_1788

I walked.

IMG_1776

Agreed wholeheartedly with a sign.

IMG_1783

And explored a little more…

IMG_1784

Of the colonial town.

IMG_1785

And hey, if you’re going to dress up in period costume and stand on the sidewalk?

IMG_1759

Don’t give me the stink eye when I take your picture.

Turning back around hoping the other half had finished talking…

IMG_1786

I saw snow.

IMG_1780

Granted it wasn’t very much, but it surprised me to see any at all.

IMG_1782

The ice skating rink surprised me as well.

IMG_1758

In Maine we wait for ponds to freeze over.

IMG_1777

In Virginia they just build one… and how they keep it frozen in 60 degree temperatures is a mystery to me.
