Have you ever visited a military cemetery and wondered why there are coins on top of the headstones? I get asked this a lot and thought I’d share.
.

.
I once saw a bratty little boy removing coins from graves in a veterans cemetery and while I don’t normally interfere with parents and their children…. you can bet I did that day.
.

.
Judging from the ad photo, I’d say that one.

I could do without a lot of things in this world, but never my books.

This is one of our large backyard apple trees. It’s a Granny Smith and has provided us with 20 years of spectacular autumn pies. But last year a massive wind storm ravaged the right side of her and we had to have an arborist in to give her a massive prune. He assured us all would be well but the harvest will be nonexistent in 2022. Sadly there wasn’t a single solitary bloom this spring …. which means a lot less pie this fall.
😫
.
That was interesting about the headstones.
I learned there is some ritual with pebbles on headstones in Jewish cemeteries but now forgot what it meant. I just remember being encouraged to put a pebble on her stone…

I’ve read the stones on Jewish graves are meant to keep the departed’s soul down with them to prevent haunting. Not sure if that’s true..

Good onya for yanking that kid up short. Too bad little Timmy’s folks weren’t available to do their jobs. There are enough military cemeteries around for every school to send their students on a field trip to learn about service people, what they do and why it’s important. It may do some of the teachers a bit of good as well.
Sorry about this year’s apples. Hang on tight.
My cats love scratchy toys, especially rugs and upholstered furniture.

There’s an equally large Macintosh tree right behind it so we won’t be apple bereft, but I will miss the Granny Smiths this fall.

What a beautiful tree. Thanks for posting about the coins. Interesting. I was not aware.

You see it most often in military cemeteries, but I’ve seen pennies on others as well.

I believe I have come across them also.

It’s a way of showing the fallen they’re not forgotten.

I knew about the coins on the headstones, my maternal grandad served in WWII and had schooled his grandkids on this tradition. As well as all my cousins are or were in several branches of the military. My snarky cat will scratch EVERYTHING but the scratch thingy I bough him. He never scratched anything (furniture) before but now I have to keep my eye and ears out for his sneaky fuzzy butt out for him. Your apple tree is just gorgeous, not to mention that’s the biggest apple tree I’ve ever seen. Granny Smiths, my favorite apple!!

I bought about a dozen scratchy things before I hit one Dudley would use. Of course he’s ruined two rugs and a chair by then…

Really? I thought it was common knowledge among vets….

I asked a couple of my Vet buddies and they never heard of it either. I wonder if this is a geographical thing?

Could be. We were in Yorktown Virginia a few years ago and saw coins on the veterans graves there… so it’s at least that far south.

Pics are missing in the wp reader…not even the broken link icon, just little dots.
I bought one of those jute balls. The cats don’t touch it.

I’m bummed because our raspberry canes aren’t producing this year. We’ve learned we only get decent fruit every other year, and unfortunately, 2022 is one of those “other” years.

I think you need to plant another off year batch and rotate.

Well, umm…doh! Why didn’t I think of that?!

We were just at the grave of Doc Holliday here in Colorado and we left a penny but we didn’t really know why (others had left various coins). Now I know why!
Maybe it’s time to plant some rhubarb?

If there was anything other than pennies on Holliday’s grave, he had some very old visitors.
