Have you herd…?

.

Our backyard has been pretty busy of late.

.

.

And our resident herd of ten are showing up every night.

.

.

They don’t usually visit when it’s still light enough to grab photos, so this was a treat.

.

.

You can have television. I’ll happily sit and watch these beautiful creatures instead.

.

.

The harem master.

.

.

I’m so glad he made it through hunting season unscathed.

.

.

In case you’re wondering why they’re called White Tailed Deer.

😉

.

Winter visitors.

.

Our resident herd is back.

.

.

I hadn’t seen them in a while but they came tromping across the back yard looking for a snack early enough the other evening for me to grab a few pics.

.

.

There were 8 total. Does, youngsters…

.

.

And the harem master… who honestly, is a bit of an ass. No one else is allowed to eat until he’s had his share.

.

.

Except this brave little fellow…

.

.

❤️

.

Good winter morning!

.

There are a lot of reasons we love living in this house.

It’s in the fabulous state of Maine.

It’s in a small town in the country.

It’s surrounded by good neighbors, as well as horses, goats and chickens.

It has enough elbow room so we don’t have to see those neighbors unless we want to.

It has a steady parade of visiting wildlife.

But best of all?

We have perfect sunrises out the back windows and perfect sunsets out the front.

And when you wake up to this?

.

.

It’s hard to find fault with your world.

.

.

Good morning!

.

.

❤️

.

Some winter snaps.

.

I’m so glad winter finally showed up. Cold temps and snow! It warms my little menopausal heart, as well as cools off the rest of me.

.

.

There’s the husband shoveling a path to the bird feeders so our feathered friends don’t go hungry. He’s such a good egg.

.

.

We use this table as snow gauge. It piles up so perfectly, how could we not?

.

.

Once the snow caps these boxwood shrubs, the birds take cover underneath. It drives Lord Dudley Mountcatten insane.

.

.

Sunrise over the backyard reveals the deer superhighway.

.

.

We don’t have virgin fresh fallen snow for long.

.

.

❤️ 🦌 ❤️

.

Snow much for that.

.

Lord Dudley Mountcatten’s idea of playing in the snow usually looks like this:

.

.

But after the first small dump of the season last week the husband took his highness out for a winter stroll.

.

.

But as much as Dudley loves the fresh air and being outside, cold feet is not his thing.

.

.

So he found the one bare patch of stone wall…

.

.

Loved on his favorite rock….

.

.

And carefully avoiding as much snow as he could, made his way back inside.

.

.

Lord Mountcatten is a fair weather feline and was pleased when all the snow melted the next day.

.

Random tidbits.

.

I have a friend who does a different type of Christmas tree every year. Some years it’s weird and funky, some years it’s traditional. This year I made a suggestion I wish she would have followed…

.

.

She was not amused, but damn. That’s epic.

Every couple of years the lazy Susan cabinet in our kitchen goes off track…. and every few years my husband asks why we need so many cans.

.

.

Someday I’ll have an answer.

.

.

I need this in my life.

.

.

Who needs pie when you have martinis?

.

.

Isn’t it sweet my cat loves rocks as much as his human mother?

And finally, a Christmas tree for Mark who has an affinity for awkward pink birds….

.

.

Random photo dump.

.

A cat and his mouse is a beautiful thing.

.

.

Lord Dudley Mountcatten hasn’t caught a live one in quite a while but he does enjoy sleeping with his toy version.

.

.

On a recent trip to the orthopedist I began wondering if he has voodoo doctor credentials.

.

.

Crystal bones are made for throwing.

.

.

Note to self…

.

.

Buy bigger bird bath.

.

.

Even he has no explanation for those ugly things…

.

Hope springs eternal.

.

These sparrows have it in for our poor cat and are seriously driving him crazy.

.

.

All of a sudden there are flocks of them gathering on our back deck and Lord Dudley Mountcatten is positively beside himself with angst.

.

.

He cackles, he cries, he paws at the window and howls to go outside.

.

.

And then runs right to the bushes where they hide when I oblige.

.

.

His Lordship is not a graceful feline and more often than not falls flat on his face.

.

.

Unless he’s sticking it in the bush on purpose.

.

.

He’s on a leash, but there’s not much walking going on.

.

.

Those birds should be ashamed of themselves. Before long Dudley will be needing kitty Valium.

.

Follow the birdies.

.

We have a group of sparrows that live to tease Lord Dudley Mountcatten .

.

.

They perch on the deck railing and patio furniture… driving him absolutely insane when he’s on the back of the couch.

.

.

So when we go outside for walkies? His Lordship is primed to hunt.

.

.

Not that he ever comes close mind you. Those birds are too smart and too fast.

.

.

But we chase them from bush to bush around the house and hope springs eternal.

.

.

They know he can’t catch them, and seem to take great pleasure in the game.

.

.

That sparrow is smiling. I know it.

.

.

You can’t really tell from the picture, but trust me.. he was airborne here.

By the time we make a full trip around the house? They’re back on the railing…. and laughing.

.

.

Lord Dudley on the other hand…

.

.

🤣
