Colors and critters.

Looking across the street to our neighbor’s organic vegetable farm is always interesting.

IMG_1507

But this time of year, it’s downright beautiful.

IMG_1508

Who knew artichokes could be so pretty?

And when our neighbor has wood chips delivered….

IMG_1463

HE HAS WOODCHIPS DELIVERED.

When you’re a farmer’s child?

You don’t need no stinkin’ sandbox.

On the critter front,

IMG_1434

We’re down to one lone woodchuck.

IMG_1437

He’s still fat…

IMG_1442

And still clumsy…

IMG_1423

And still hangs out on our deck once in a while. But it’s autumn, and all his brothers and sisters are finding dens and getting ready for winter. I doubt even this one will be here much longer.

Sigh…

IMG_1460

Autumn also means the deer are changing into their darker winter coats. One summer coated hold out is on the right for comparison.

A murder of crows have now discovered our bird bath.

Why are they called a murder?

The Oxford English Dictionary suggests this is an allusion to the crow’s traditional association with violent death or its harsh and raucous cry.  If you’ve ever heard dozens of agitated crows in full cry, it really does sound as if they’re yelling bloody murder.

As long as they don’t murder me in my sleep, I don’t care what you call them.

Uh oh.

IMG_1511

And finally, we have a new skunk in town.

IMG_1513

I admit I never really paid attention to skunk tails before, but we’ve had so many different families this year I’ve gotten to recognize them by their individual patterns.

This is Tippy.

IMG_1516

Brilliantly named for the white tip on her tail.

Is she really a she?

I neither know, nor care to get close enough to find out.

It’s starting to look pretty in my neck of the woods.

It’s Fall y’all!

Autumn is my favorite time of year.

Crisp air, apples, pumpkins and fiery trees….

IMG_E6517

And though I live in New England…

IMG_E6525

And see Mother Nature’s glorious show every October….

Img_4230

I never tire of it.

Img_0505

I’m a certified leaf peeper…

Img_4257

So when I crash my car into one of those pretty colored trees because I’m driving home one handed snapping pictures for my blog?

Img_0729

I’m telling the police it’s your fault.

And will expect you lot to start a GoFundMe page for my car repairs and hospital bills.

Things I like today…. part 8.

I like….

These!

Have you tried them yet?

IMG_6134

Well, what are you waiting for?

Go!

I like….

Taking a break on our deck after mowing the lawn a few weeks ago, and having a friend show up.

IMG_E5979

I thought for sure he’d run when he saw me. But he took a good look, deemed me no immediate threat and happily settled in for a nap.

Until the husband opened the door and scared him off.

I like….

Reading that a lobsterman in Falmouth caught a rare 1 in 100 million cotton candy blue lobster….

Took a picture… and donated him to an aquarium where he never has to worry about being captured or eaten again.

I like…

Amazing sunrises in our backyard.

IMG_6300

I like….

Driving home along country roads this time of year and seeing the trees bursting with color.

Autumn in New England is hard to beat.

Life is good!

Say it isn’t so…..

Autumn is closing in.

And it’s my favorite time of the year.

Img_0733

The air is crisp, the trees are full of apples….

IMG_0444

And if you’re lucky enough to live in Maine like I do?

Mother Nature puts on a glorious show of turning leaves.

(Yes, those are my photos. And yes, those are my apple trees.)

But this year?

There’s something I’m not looking forward to.

The annual Pumpkin Spice’d Β  every damn thing but condomsΒ  invasion will be rolling out shortly, and while that’s annoying enough….

This year?

There’s a new kid on the pumpkin spiced block.

It’s true… as well as disgusting.

Yes.

Pumpkin Spiced Spam.

Forget changing leaves and brisk breezes — pumpkin spice is the official harbinger of fall. And, for better or worse, Spam is entering the flavor fray.

Starting September 23, lovers of all things autumn can purchase limited-edition Spam Pumpkin Spice on Walmart and Spam’s online stores, a spokesperson for Hormel Foods told CNN.
There’s no pumpkin in this pork: It’s mixed with cinnamon, clove, allspice and nutmeg, according to the spokesperson.
What could a sweet mystery meat possibly pair well with? Spam recommends topping waffles with it, adding it to a fall vegetable hash or baking it into a cornbread muffin.
Honestly, waking up to a warm stack of Spam-and-waffles on a chilly fall morning sounds kinda nice.
Could this sweet SPAM be the tipping point for pumpkin spice fatigue? It’s not likely–people go crazy for the flavor, and it’s rooted in neurology: Sugar and pumpkin spice are an addictive combination that the brain learns to crave.
And with seasonal marketing from pumpkin spice pushers like Starbucks, brains and bodies begin to associate autumn and comfort with the flavor.
So if you’re into pumpkin spiced Spam, don’t be ashamed.
You’re just wired that way.

While there’s no amount of money that could convince me try it and report back….

If one of you would, I’d appreciate a first hand account of how truly awful it is.

It’s that time of year again.

IMG_9308

Our backyard trees are full of apples and I’ve been picking like crazy.

1i1ioz

Well no, I didn’t.

IMG_E9377

But yesterday I made apple bread and Norwegian apple pie, so that’s just as good.

IMG_E9379

Autumn in Maine is pretty damn fabulous, not to mention colorful. The trees are starting to turn, our neighbor is harvesting pumpkins from his fields and if you drop by the house this month you’ll be stuffed full of baked apple treats.

IMG_0513

My glazed apple bundt cake is pretty special, although the secret ingredient may have something to do with it.

Yeah.

We do apples up right at River’s house.

Oh dear… deer.

We live in the country, which means we have critters visiting on a daily basis.

We’re animal lovers, which means we love them all.

Raccoons, opossums, woodchucks, chipmunks, pheasants, fox, hawks, the occasional bear, one moose….. and yes, even the skunks.

They come to nosh under our bird feeders, nibble our blueberry bushes and raid our apple trees. We love it.Β  And year after year, we get more deer. At times, we’ve had as many as 24 in the backyard…. which was glorious. They’re such graceful, beautiful creatures.

Of course they’ve also broke every bird feeder I’ve ever hung, which is why we started buying feed a few years ago and putting out a nightly treat.

IMG_E9229

Now before you pop an environmental cork, we are not subsistence feeding deer. It’s 2 little bowls with a few cups of sweetened grain in each. Not nearly enough to satisfy a single deer, no less a herd. They’re still feeding naturally, we don’t allow hunting on the property and neither do the neighbors, so we’re not luring them to their deaths. Think of it as an Oreo or two. They love it, and we love to watch them.

IMG_E9231

We have families with young spotted fawns, we have rugged old bucks with impressive racks and even one doe with a bum leg who we worried about the entire winter, but she survived just fine.

The herd tends to disperse in the summer and for the last few months we’ve only had 2 yearlings. But the other night we had 6.

Autumn is coming….

And we love our backyard.
