Driveway replacement inconveniences.

.

As we wait for the smoothed dirt to dry on the newly torn up and backfilled driveway, a word about the inconveniences of this repair/replace project.

.

.

Ours cars now have to sit outside in the elements for the week it’s taking the crew to do the job and probably for 2-3 weeks after that. Forget the fact that Ethel, my Subaru, is a garage virgin and has never spent a night outside…. not being able to use the driveway means the only place we can pull into our property is way out here.

.

Which makes walking to your car in the rain and hauling groceries back to the house a right royal pain in the *ss.

And since we contracted to have the culvert replaced?

.

Our mailbox had to go as well.

Trying to predict what time the postman will drive by so I can run out there to meet him is getting old fast.

.

I love my town.

In the continuing series Small Town Life Be Different…. here are the latest missives from mine.

This was so sweet. Our local UPS man… who distributes doggie treats on his route… is in the hospital with pneumonia, so all his four legged customers posted pictures.

Because traffic alerts in the country are less about speeding and more about manure.

Every year the women of the Historical Society sew a quilt with local scenes to be auctioned off.

The Town Office bought the first one where it still hangs proudly.

Yes, I showed this to the husband. And no, he hasn’t removed his absolutely no chickens ban.

.

.

Yikes. Critters that crawl under your house and die are the worst. But I can’t say I’ve ever known one to stink of garlic. And speaking of stinking…

Word to the wise… if you think it’s your year? It most definitely is. 🤢

As he predicted, this man’s post got a whole lotta hate. He’s new to the area… and I’m guessing he isn’t going to be very popular. Buying a house in a rural part of Maine means generations of the previous owners might still be inhabiting your back 40. A man up the road from us has a cemetery from the late 1700’s on his land. He doesn’t know the family or their descendants, but lovingly cares for the plot all the same. It’s called respect.

.

Even the pandemic doesn’t stop them…

.

I went out the mailbox the other day, found a hand addressed letter and thought, how nice! Someone took the time to put pen to paper like we used to.

And then I read it.

.

.

Damn.

.

.

It seems Covid 19 has stopped those annoying Jehovah Witnesses from knocking on our door…

.

.

But they’ve found an alternate way to try and spread their word.

Oh well, I’m sure the post office appreciates the added revenue.

.

.

Who is Uncle Sam….

And why does the bastard want all our money?

Ain’t that the truth.

But I’ve just finished doing our taxes…. and now I’m brain dead.

Yes, I always wait until the last minute. Why not? We haven’t gotten a refund since Christ was a Corporal so our returns don’t get mailed until April 14th.

You heard me, mailed. As in snail….with a stamp and everything.

Remember those?

Haven’t you heard the Post Office is dying?

I mail all my bills.

I mail back every postage paid envelope that comes my way… empty.

I even  *gasp*  mail actual birthday cards.

Technology is great, don’t get me wrong. But there’s nothing less personal than a 2 second birthday text.

No one needs that.

So be thoughtful, take the extra time to write your best wishes….. and help save the post office you know you’re going to miss when it’s gone.
