Bambi!!

We had our first little guy sighting of the season the other day.

IMG_2704

And oh my goodness….

IMG_2705

If that isn’t the definition of the word sweet I’ll eat a kale souffle.

IMG_2707

The family kept a close huddle on the food.

IMG_2709

But Junior managed to push his/her way into the fray.

IMG_2712

I think I might have audibly squeaked in joy at that point.

IMG_2714

Bambi!

IMG_2706

We knew some of the does were pregnant, but they won’t bring the fawns up out of the woods for the first few months.

IMG_2716

And even then it’s usually very early in the morning when yours truly is still in dreamland.

IMG_2718

So it was wonderful to see them in the late late afternoon when the sun was still shining and providing light for pictures.

IMG_2719

Welcome to the herd little one.

IMG_2721

You’ll want to stick around, the crazy lady with the camera lays out a pretty nice buffet.

I’m ready for my close up…..

Okay, I admit it.

IMG_2689

The little  rat bastards  fellows are cute.

IMG_2687

Sitting on the railing….

IMG_2693

With vibrant day lilies blooming in the background…..

IMG_2691

Voguing for the camera like some fur covered super model.

IMG_2697

Though I highly doubt Naomi Campbell ever pooped on her runway.

IMG_2695

Cute, yes…

IMG_2690

But you’re still a giant pain in my ass!

Everyone wants a seat at the table.

IMG_2638

This little female Baltimore Oriole for example.

IMG_2639

She sat there for 15 minutes or so…..

IMG_2640

Waiting in vane for dinner to be served.

IMG_2643

Then there’s my  sworn enemy  little  rat bastard  red squirrel.

IMG_2658

We may have evicted them from their corner post home…..

IMG_2655

But it hasn’t stopped their daily visits.

IMG_2644

And raids on the deer bound apple slices.

Turn your back if you want you pesky varmint…. we both know what you’re up to.

Hullo gawgeous…..

IMG_2614

Our buck finally showed up at a light enough hour for me to get some decent photographs.

IMG_2615

Yes you, you handsome devil.

IMG_2616

And while I love seeing him….

IMG_2618

I fully appreciate his wariness and reticence to visit the nightly buffet.

When you’re that handsome you have to be careful.

IMG_2621

His rapidly growing rack will make him a prime target of every yahoo with a rifle in a  few months.

IMG_2624

And the thought of his beautiful head mounted on someone’s wall makes me physically ill.

IMG_2625

But for now, he and his family are safe.

IMG_2630

And we enjoy our rare sightings.

IMG_2635

Even if his rude wife does keep sticking her tongue out at me.

Random critters.

I was finally able to grab a few pictures of our resident buck.

IMG_2441

Which is getting harder to do as the summer wears on.

IMG_2430

But this father son shot was pretty sweet.

IMG_2474

Junior’s antlers are growing.

IMG_2476

And it always makes me wonder what the felt feels like.

IMG_2519

Naturally there are woodchuck photos.

IMG_2603

And some close ups.

IMG_2606

We have one lone chipmunk this year.

IMG_2583

And yes, those pesky red squirrel babies are still here.

IMG_2579

Using our deck railing as a cafeteria.

IMG_2580

As well as a toilet.

IMG_2581

Yes, I’m talking to you.

Clearly your mother didn’t tell you not to shit where you eat.

Bad form. Very bad…..

Baby squirrel resurgence.

They’re baaaaaaack.

Well, at least the babies are.

IMG_4632

And they’re making themselves right at home on the deck.

IMG_4631

A little too much at home for my liking.

IMG_4622

Because they’re trying to get back into the hole they all came tumbling out of last month.

Cute? Yes.

Respectful house guests? No.

IMG_4634

And then the other day, a friend helped me out.

IMG_4637

No, it’s not the same picture.

Look in the lower right hand corner….

Baby woodchuck is finally earning his keep.

Well done sir.

Carry on.

Ducks

I have no idea why we have a pair of visiting Mallard ducks this year…

But like all the other critters who venture in….. they’re welcome.

IMG_2095

Though the drake’s table manners leave a little to be desired.

IMG_2097

Is standing in the dish of deer grain really necessary?

IMG_2069

Other times he’s a bit like Caligula.

IMG_2072

And eats lying down.

IMG_2071

Ducks.

I hope they remember how nice we are to them.

Baby buck.

Our resident buck with the felt covered mini rack has flown the proverbial coop, which is a shame, because I think most of you…. some of you?…. alright, at least one of you… was enjoying the fuzzy updates on antler growth progress.

But never fear.

IMG_2050

Our old doe, who we call pregnant because she always seems to be, has last year’s progeny with her on a daily basis now.

IMG_2051

So we’ll start from scratch.

IMG_2052

Baby buck antlers.

IMG_2053

At this point, they’re just little nubs that he keeps rubbing on trees and rocks.

And can you blame him?

The poor little guy looks like a four legged Frankenstein.

A day most fowl… as well as foul.

It started out well enough, with a sighting of a beloved yet rarely seen visitor.

IMG_1822

This time he was across the street, walking along the edge of our neighbor’s farm.

IMG_1828

He’s a beautiful ring necked pheasant we named Phineas.

IMG_1827

They’re not native to Maine and can’t survive the winters, but a man up the road raises them and occasionally one or two will break free. Last year, Phineas brought his woman to our backyard. She was looking for a nesting site… but we never did see any chicks.

Later on in the day….

Saturday, May frickin‘ 9th?

IMG_1892

We had ducks.

And snow.

This is the first time we’ve ever had mallards.

IMG_1893

Sadly….it isn’t the first time we’ve had snow in May.

IMG_1895

The ducks stayed quite a while, raiding the droppings from the bird feeders and the leftover deer grain.

IMG_1904

And then a friend joined them.

IMG_1905

A fowl day for sure.
