What cod be better?

.

On the way to the commissary in Bangor the other day we were disappointed to find our favorite little diner closed for lunch. This sent us searching far and wide for something quick other than the awful fast food chains. Pulling off the highway at the small town of Newport, we took a chance on a place called Anglers.

.

.

Despite the name, (Newport is neither new… incorporated 1814… nor a port anywhere near the water) I didn’t hold out much hope for fresh seafood.

.

.

The restaurant is a dressed up family diner but damned if they didn’t make a nice cocktail.

.

.

An Absolute Citron deckhand lemonade. Quite refreshing.

.

.

I went with the smaller ‘minnow’ portion of fried shrimp and was pleasantly surprised. Fresh, light and perfectly cooked. Husband had a nice clam chowder and broiled scallops which he said were equally good. But the thing that really rocked my world and made me do more than merely contemplate returning?

.

.

.99 cent drafts. And my husband doesn’t drink Budweiser, this was a Maine craft beer called Allagash White which normally costs him $7 -8 a glass. We wondered if this was a serious senior discount, a special price for veterans, or the waitress just made a big mistake. On the way out we asked… and were told all drafts are .99 cents, all the time.

Needless to say this will now be our go to lunch destination before the monthly commissary run.

Maine musings

A quick look at what’s happening in my corner of the world.

.

.

That’s just… wrong.

.

.

Alpaca Black Gold. Come and get it!

.

.

I buy grain and seed from this store and must say the welcoming committee is quite friendly.

.

.

If you ever see this beer? Drink it. Weird and wonderful… it’s tart with a hint of citrusy sweetness and you actually get a graham cracker crust after note. It’s bizarre, but awesome.

Random tidbits

.

Because my life is a never ending series of nothing important.

.

.

A 48 inch pike. While this man looks proud, they’re actually an invasive species that are destroying our lake’s natural ecosystems. People catch and release because no one wants to eat them.

.

.

A blackberry lime sour from Mast Landing brewery. Pink, tart and strangely creamy. Yum!

.

.

Our local pub has started serving Naan flatbreads. Sweet potato, bacon, caramelized onions, blue cheese with a honey maple drizzle. Double yum!

.

.

Our resident fox is coming earlier in the evening to beat the skunks and raccoons to the buffet.

.

.

We’ve had nothing but rain all month and our lawn is really getting torn up by the deer herd. Going to be a lot of yard work in our future.

.

Schooled!

.

The weekly pool game saw team play again today.

.

.

And after spending four hours this morning cooking lasagna, then serving it and the salad to the crew, I took a hard cider break before I ferried it all back in the house to do dishes.

.

.

I sat, sipped and watched the mild mannered old widower school the group with a twinkle in his eye. Game after game, no matter who he teamed with, it was a rout.

And no amount of freshly tapped beer helped.

.

.

The other three couldn’t seem to get out of their own way.

.

News you can’t use.

.

Yes, stupid headlines are back. There are so damn many, I have to share…

.

.

While it’s true I don’t have any children, I have often felt the need to turn a hose on one. *Note to self – inquire about teacher’s assistant positions in Kentucky *

.

.

Oh FFS. Are we such delicate creatures that we can’t stand the full force of carbonated bubbles now? I fear for humanity, I really do.

.

.

I’m not a sportswoman. Hell, my idea of exercise these days is bending over to scoop out the litter box… but if the breakfast of champions is beer? I may have to rethink my aversion to physical activity.

You know your cat is spoiled when he gets lifted up to the window to watch the birds.

Pint of beer my husband recently received at our local pub. I detest IPA’s, but beer is my juice of choice.

.

Results of a horrible multi unit fire that displaced 10 people in our town. This is what the old farm used to look like in the 1800’s.

.

.

By the following day a gofundme campaign had raised $14,000. For a town with a population of just over 700, I’d say we’re pretty generous folk.

.

.

A mussel appetizer the husband ordered this week. I stopped counting at 38. Definitely get your money’s worth there.

.

.

It’s true. He told me….

.

.

This.

This is what happens when temperatures rise too quickly in what should be winter in Maine. All our lovely snow melts, freezes and melts again. We have a skating rink driveway and mini floods everywhere because the ground is still too cold to absorb the water.

This…. is a mess.

Our neighbors. The larger horse is an absolute bully and follows closely behind the pony nipping his butt all day long.

.

I keep rooting for the little guy to give him a good swift kick, but clearly he’s a pacifist.

.

.

A recently purchased tee shirt. I can never resist a funny brewery slogan, but when I researched this one I discovered it just sells equipment. No matter, it’s still beer related.

The look your cat gives you when you don’t share your chicken salad sandwich.

Sorry Dudley, it had onions. I couldn’t.

Since turning 50? This is the story of my life.

Does a moose drool?

.

The staircase in the man cave/Barn Mahal has been put into service as an impromptu bulletin board.

.

.

Photos, stickers, and funny cards have begun to surround the magnetic bottle opener.

The husband has had this one since he was 25 years old. He thought it was funny then…

Now? Not so much.

.

.

That gem was lodged inside an old book he bought at an antique store.

But back to the title of my post.

Does a moose drool?

.

.

Thanks to my blogging friend mistermuse, I can authoritatively say yes…. at least in Missoula Montana where the Big Sky Brewery produced a beer whose label was saved and thoughtfully mailed to yours truly.

It’s the perfect addition to a Maine bar… and I’m sure we will now be the envy of all our friends.

👍

.

The moose is loose.

.

My booze moose came in the mail Saturday.

And I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t a puzzle .

.

.

This is the type of thing that makes the spatial reasoning challenged among us break into a cold sweat.

.

.

Oh! The horror.

But I wanted to surprise the husband so I dove right in….

.

.

And soon, a boozy moose appeared.

Was I disappointed in the lack of decent beer portrayed? Yes.

Busch Light and Coors Light will never pass our beer fridge’s portals.

Nope. Never. Not happening.

.

.

I’ve determined the best place to hang him is on the big barn doors that are no longer doors. The husband’s warped antique mirror will have to be relocated…

.

.

And his English pub ring toss game might be an issue.

Because while the booze moose is fun, it’s not what you would call solidly constructed. One errant ring toss could ruin him.

.

.

This will require deep thought, so for now…..

.

.

He’s just bellying up to the bar.

.

A very liquid Saturday.

.

It started out innocently enough. We needed to replace my husband’s keg in the man cave and the store where we bought the first one was out.

.

.

So we went straight to the source, Allagash brewery in Portland… where we discovered they wouldn’t accept their keg and return our deposit because we hadn’t purchased it there. They also wanted $100 deposit on a new keg and since the brewery is an hour away, we said to hell with it and just settled down to drink.

.

.

At 11:00 in the morning. Don’t judge.

.

.

Since Covid, they’ve built a large outdoor pavilion…. and we happily sampled some drafts.

.

.

A good time was had…

.

.

As were beer cheese dip and pretzels.

.

.

This Belgian dubbel called Foliage Report was especially tasty.

.

.

As we drank, a giant black limo pulled up and discharged a group of similarly dressed young men. I’m guessing it was a brewery hopping bachelor party (Maine has the largest number of craft breweries in the country. Is it any wonder I live here?) and thought that was a great idea.

👍

On our way out we had to hit the brew store…

.

.

And purchased 2 four packs of that fabulous seasonal dubbel. 2 four packs? $24.

Yikes!

.

.

And since the day was young…..

To be continued.
