I love my town… Part who cares anymore.

.

Our town has come up with some marvelously creative ways to keep kids active and engaged during the Covid months. This is the latest.

.

.

Businesses and public areas are all displaying clues.

In other news, people are offering free treasures.

.

.

Dirty, smoke stained old cups from a discontinued set? Christ, don’t tell my husband.. he’d be on them like white on rice.

.

.

An icicle contest. Most excellent!

.

.

Our big one had grown to 5 feet so I proudly entered it to take the lead…..

.

.

Until Robert showed up.

.

.

Damn you Robert. You and your massive projectile.

.

Of icicles, shots and cats.

.

Our resident projectile has melted halfway, split and refrozen.

.

.

47 inches and still anxiously awaiting an unsuspecting red squirrel to wander by.

.

.

In other news…. my husband received his first Covid vaccine shot this week. Yay! No side effects other than a slightly sore arm for a day or two, though we’ve heard most people are experiencing flu like symptoms after the second shot.

Shots.

.

.

Sorry, that’s where my mind went.

.

.

Lord Dudley Mountcatten is starting to get used to having his picture taken.

.

.

But that doesn’t mean he enjoys it.

Yikes. If looks could kill…

.

Of sarcasm and gutters.

.

This store has my name written all over it.

.

.

My husband would tell you we don’t need any more sarcasm here, but I beg to differ.

.

.

And maybe that’s what was wrong with this month…. I didn’t make it my bitch.

Snow, rain, freeze, ice, melt, repeat.

.

.

And by repeat…. I mean I keep repeating fix the damn gutter! to my husband so I don’t have to listen to this all day long.

.

.

And in case you’re wondering what kind of weather we have in Maine?

.

.

That sums it up nicely.

.

Winter is finally here.

.

After an extremely mild December with a greenish brown Christmas and a warm rainy January…

.

.

February is roaring in strong….

.

.

And cold.

.

.

The ice has finally frozen solid enough to hold the fishing shacks on the river, which is big business up here in Maine.

.

.

Do I want to sit in an 8×10 plywood building and stare at a hole in the ice in subzero temperatures waiting for an oily little smelt to swim by?

.

.

I do not.

.

.

No matter how pretty the sunsets are.

.

.

But more power to the rugged souls that do.

.

Admit it, you want these.

.

I mean, really. Who wouldn’t?

.

.

A wiener beverage is a beautiful thing.

.

.

Who knew pricks were so helpful?

.

.

I’ve been seeing a lot of the next type of item recently.

.

.

If someone could explain the current fascination with unicorn bodily functions to me, that would be swell.

.

.

Mixed tapes?

Someone needs to set Marty McFly’s dial to the 21rst Century.

.

.

First it was cat butts, now Corgi.

.

.

The world really has gone mad.

.

Real time at Casa River.

.

So this is my life.

.

.

I elevate, ice, read, and groan every time I have to move. Not how I envisioned spending my favorite time of year.

The foliage is peak, the temperatures are blissfully cool and I’m stranded on the couch like a beached Beluga.

There are very few good things to report when you’ve torn your meniscus and damaged your MCL, but one must take solace where one can.

.

.

My husband feeling guilty for his mobility and finally installing the new blinds in the office? The ones that have been sitting next to his desk for the last 3 months?

.

.

My husband breaking the special order extra wide curtain rod for my Waverly valance after I told him to be careful because they’re tricky to take down? Because he has no patience for anything the least bit domestic and never thinks I know what I’m talking about? Because he was cursing a blue streak as he tried to tape it back together?

Solace for a couch bound whale wife.

.

.

Please excuse the 2 six packs, 5 bottles of wine and the jug of premixed cherry limeade margaritas in the corner.

My liquor cabinet is full… and Jeff Bezos can only do so much.

.

And speaking of ice….

Oh, we weren’t talking about ice? Well, I am now.

We had ice this year.

Lots and lots of ice.

The shovel the snow off the driveway, watch your feet slide out from under you and land smack on your ass kind of ice.

Everything was covered in sheets of ice for weeks on end.

Of course this made for some pretty fabulous icicles.

On the garage, they started out small.

But then they grew.

Which made getting in and out of the garage rather perilous.

Did I mention this was the section of the garage I was nagging the husband to put a new gutter on all last summer and fall?

Maybe now he knows why.
