Cape Cod Day 4…. the Oak Bluffs Victorians.

Martha’s Vineyard is lovely.

IMG_8989

An oasis of windswept rugged shores…

IMG_8991

Small fishing communities…

IMG_8998

And marshlands.

But the sun was going down and there was still too much left to see! The husband told me we had enough daylight for one more site, so I knew it had to be Oak Bluffs.

map 16

Everyone we spoke to recommended we go there and see the marvelous Victorians, so we did.

IMG_9005

Not really sure where we were going, or where they actually were, we found a narrow  street…

IMG_9003

And a few rows of small houses. Yes, they were cute…. but I figured that couldn’t be what all the fuss was about.

IMG_9010

And then we turned a corner.

And the houses got larger.

IMG_9012

And larger.

IMG_9021

And larger.

IMG_9028

And larger still.

IMG_9013

In a word?

IMG_9026

Stunning.

IMG_9029

One after another, lined up facing the ocean.

IMG_9034

It was quite impressive.

IMG_9033

Naturally, I’m hanging out the window like a crazed canine clicking away, taking pictures of as many as I can.

Pretty close.

Just imagine her holding an iPhone….

IMG_9046

I wanted to get out and walk but the husband was having none of it.

IMG_9050

Yes, the day was ending….

IMG_9053

But… but…

I know I didn’t photograph them all!

( It wasn’t until I returned home and did a little research that I realized we had missed the most famous part!   Next time. )

IMG_9059

Sun setting…

IMG_9062

We headed back to the ferry….

IMG_9064

And got ready to say goodbye to the beautiful Vineyard.

Cape Cod day 4…. where we search in vain for a lighthouse to explore on Martha’s Vineyard.

Who doesn’t love a lighthouse? Raise your hand.

If your hand is up, go sit in the corner while the rest of the nice people enjoy this post.

We didn’t have any luck exploring the first lighthouse we’d found since it was on private property, but hope springs eternal.

IMG_8951

Decisions, decisions.

IMG_8949

East Chop has a  lighthouse?

IMG_8952

Decision made.

IMG_8957

Yay!

A lighthouse….

IMG_8956

Boo… a gate that closed it to the public.

0 for 2, we headed to the next one. We’re nothing if not persistent.

Onward!

IMG_8960

But apparently not that way.

IMG_8961

In case you’re wondering? I’ll take that house, right there.

Oh, alright. I’ll take Idris Elba as well.

So… Gay Head Light.

map 16

We found it, parked down below and walked through the gate.

IMG_8988

Then we saw it.

IMG_8963

It…

And the gate that blocked the entrance to it.

IMG_8987

May I just say…. WTF Martha’s Vineyard?

Strike 3. Okay, I give up.

IMG_8964

There it is, a perfectly nice lighthouse.

IMG_8983

I’m sure it was marvelous inside, not that we’ll ever know.

IMG_8969

But the views of the Aquinnah Cliffs?

IMG_8973

Admittedly, pretty wonderful.

Wind?

IMG_8979

A wee bit.

Goodbye hairdo. Next trip to the Vineyard? I’m wearing a hat and never taking it off.

And because every vacation post must have rocks?

IMG_8968

Rocks.

Rocks that mark the sight where the lighthouse originally stood.

IMG_8978

Rocks.

IMG_8971

Rocks with the late afternoon sun.

You’re welcome.

Cape Cod Day 4, Black Dog Tavern, Vineyard Haven.

map 15

If you live in New England, I can guarantee you’ve seen numerous bumper stickers, t shirts and assorted swag with the ubiquitous black dog silhouette.

X1025_grande

But on day 4 of our fabulous Cape Cod adventure, we had lunch at the real thing.

IMG_8917

The original Black Dog Tavern on Martha’s Vineyard.

For a sweetly illustrated history, click here.

IMG_8923

It’s a rustic little place…

IMG_8918

With some fabulous views.

IMG_8936

Filled with maritime history as well as the flavor of the sea….

And on the day we had lunch there?

Even an adorable real life black dog on the beach.

IMG_8938

(No worries… it was a cool day, he had water and his owners checked on him regularly.)

IMG_8935

Cocktail?

Don’t mind if I do….

IMG_8920

Since we were at the Black Dog, I tried a Black Dog Orange Crush.

IMG_8926

Which might have to become my new favorite way to wake up the day.

IMG_8922

Happily sipping, we enjoyed watching the ferry.

IMG_8928

The boats..

IMG_8933

The harbor…

IMG_8929

And local craft beer disappear.

But yes, the food. We came for food…

IMG_8927

Quahog chowder. Thick, creamy and delicious with homemade croutons made for a nice start.

What’s a quahog you ask?

It’s a large hard shelled clam.

quahog

Isn’t that just typical human behavior?

Name your pet, then kill him to find out how old he is.

Sorry Ming, you deserved better. And I sincerely hope you weren’t in our soup.

IMG_8942

I was in the mood for a good chargrilled burger and this one didn’t disappoint.

IMG_8941

The husband? He inhaled two dozen mussels.

Replete, we said goodbye to the real black dog….

IMG_8943

The views…

IMG_8948

The pier….

IMG_8946

And the original Black Dog Tavern.

IMG_8944

Fervently wishing they would come to Maine and build one on our coast!

Cape Cod Day 4 … a special moment in Menemsha, Martha’s Vineyard

When we left Edgartown I saw a sign saying Menemsha, and something in the deep dark recesses of my brain sparked.

map 14

To be honest, I didn’t even know why until I got there.

IMG_8881

The art wasn’t familiar.

IMG_8882

Neither were the warnings about jellyfish and nude bathing…. two things that should never be experienced together.

So while the husband made a new friend…

IMG_8887

I walked around wondering why this particular place had called to me.

Wind?

Just a wee bit…

IMG_8885

It was a lovely spot.

IMG_8889

And as I wandered…

IMG_8893

I realized what I was doing.

IMG_8910

I was walking in my late father’s footsteps.

IMG_8901

He was an artist….. and had painted this very spot.

IMG_1466 (2)

That’s why we were there.

Img_3995 (500x375)

Because all my life….. I’d seen the word Menemsha on a few of his paintings and never knew what it meant.

IMG_8888

I lost my father when I was 15.

Much too young…

IMG_8911

We missed so many things.

IMG_8883

But for a moment, on this day….

IMG_8912

He walked with me.

IMG_8897

And my heart was full.

Cape Cod Day 3…. the Pilgrim Trail, Plymouth

Behind the (not so historic) grist mill? A path….

IMG_8781

That turned out to be more historical than the building we paid to see.

IMG_8739

It was a lovely walk….

IMG_8732

That followed the brook.

IMG_8730

The murals were fun.

IMG_8731

IMG_8734

And certainly brightened up the underpass.

IMG_8733

The path led to a park.

IMG_8746

And I have to admit I’ve always been a sucker for a good park.

IMG_8738

Maybe it’s because I grew up in New Jersey where large properties are for the uber rich.

imagesV2D3PYNN

IMG_8742

Maybe it’s because parks are always a refuge of green open space in the middle of a city.

IMG_8743

Maybe it’s because you can tell a lot about a place by what they display in their parks….

IMG_8745

Like this statue dedicated to the many immigrants who have flocked to our shores.

IMG_8737

Maybe it’s because it’s just a nice place to walk your dog…

IMG_8741

Whatever the reason, it was a nice way to approach downtown Plymouth and the harbor.

IMG_8740

Where I’d finally get to lay eyes the most famous rock of all time…

Plymouth Rock!

Come on…

You had to know that was coming, right?

Cape Cod Day 2, a feel for the Cape…. and food.

map3

Leaving Hyannis, we headed out on Route 28 towards Dennisport.

IMG_8492

Past marshes…

IMG_8489

Windswept grasses…

IMG_8493

And homes that perch along the shores.

IMG_8499

With weathered shingles and wide porches to catch the breeze and the views.

IMG_8504

These are the homes I think of when I envision the Cape.

IMG_8503

Fabulous places built to withstand the elements.

IMG_8511

And windmills?

IMG_8510

No, not usually. But we saw quite a few of them.

IMG_8513

As well as homes with their very own lighthouses.

IMG_8514

Tell your mother in law her bedroom is up there and see how often she comes to visit.

building-up-mother-in-law-memes

But enjoying the scenery is hard work, so…

IMG_8506

Lunch….

IMG_8535

At Clancy’s in Dennisport.

IMG_8524

Perched on the Swan River….

IMG_8516

We dined, and drank… with a view.

IMG_8523

And since cranberries rule in the Cape…

IMG_8515

I had the Cape Cod cranberry mule.

IMG_8517

Along with some rich creamy chowder…

IMG_8519

And a wonderful scallop roll I forgot to photograph until I had demolished it.

IMG_8520

I know.

But hey, I was hungry… be happy you got soup.

IMG_8521

And a picture of the pretty ladies room sinks…

IMG_8522

With free salt rub, that the bartender told us everyone steals. Bowl, saucer, spoon et al.

WTH ladies?

Share with your sisters.

Cape Cod, Day 2… JFK memorial park, the beach and some grazing geese.

Close to the harbor we found a nice beach…

IMG_8451

Framed by those lovely shingle sided homes that are so typically Cape Cod.

IMG_8449

And quintessentially coastal New England.

IMG_8448

I’ve always loved them.

IMG_8447

Up from the beach?

IMG_8460

Canada Geese, lined up like bowling pins.

IMG_8486

I love me some goosers!

IMG_8465

And behind the goosers?

IMG_8456

The JFK memorial.

IMG_8472

On this day, quiet…

IMG_8475

Reverential…

And filled with grazing geese.

IMG_8469

I imagine this park is packed during the summer….

IMG_8468

But happily we had it mostly to ourselves that day.

IMG_8487

Well, us….

And 17 adorable water fowl.

IMG_8480

Cape Cod, Day 2… Hyannis, JFK socks and creative pooper scooping.

map2

As many of you probably know, John F. Kennedy’s family’s compound is in Hyannis… and when you’re there it’s pretty hard to escape the fact. Streets, housing developments, restaurants…. they’re all named for some part of the Kennedy legacy. So we said if you can’t beat em, join em….. and visited the JFK museum.

IMG_8429

Unfortunately it was under construction when we visited…

IMG_8428

So there won’t be any good exterior shots…

IMG_8427

Or good interior shots for that matter because photography was prohibited. I’m not really sure why, as there were very few vintage artifacts to flash damage. And to be honest, the whole place was disappointing. It consisted of multiple rooms filled with large photos, prints and news clippings that I could have just easily researched online. From my couch, in my pajamas.  The real museum is in Boston… so my advice? Skip this one and drive to beantown.

Unless you’re in desperate need of some  presidential socks…

IMG_8426

Which I bootlegged a picture of.

Since it was a beautiful day, we strolled to the harbor next.

IMG_8442

Where the husband made friends with a seagull..

IMG_8438

Who didn’t seem too pleased with the rules.

IMG_8439

Being off season and November, the art shanties were vacant…

IMG_8440

But it must be wonderful to walk there in the summer and watch local artists at work.

IMG_8430

This time of year the harbor was home to charter and fishing boats.

IMG_8446

As most of the tourists have fled for warmer ports.

IMG_8434

But it was a pretty spot to watch the ferry come in from Martha’s Vineyard.

And enjoy the day.

IMG_8444

Unless you’re a dog walker….

IMG_8445

Who apparently have to follow closely behind their pets and strategically aim a saucepan at Fido’s butt.

Good times.

Resort hopping Part 2. The Mountain View Grand.

Hidden away in tiny Whitefield, New Hampshire is a gem.

IMG_8254

A sprawling hotel…

IMG_8255

Packed with old world charm.

Sadly they were renovating the front entrance when we visited so we had to sneak in the side.

IMG_8267

Look at those doors!

IMG_8258

Chess anyone?

IMG_8260

I’m a sucker for a good porch.

IMG_8265

And this one did not disappoint.

IMG_8259

I could happily plop here with a good book….

IMG_8263

A pitcher of margaritas…

IMG_8262

And never leave.

IMG_8269

Back inside, I checked out the wall of history…

IMG_8268

And some great old photographs…

IMG_8266

IMG_8273

While the husband continued his “I shall pee everywhere I can in Western Maine and New Hampshire” challenge with an upscale rest room this time.

And speaking of rest rooms…

IMG_8270

Even I had to check out the pink marble in theirs.

But ooh la la…

IMG_8272

There were private sinks inside the ladies room stalls.

Is that some chic shit or what?

IMG_8285

Moving on through the lounge…

IMG_8275

We found a dining room… and the place where we would spend the next two hours.

IMG_8284

The bar.

Don’t look surprised, you knew it was coming.

IMG_8279

One Lemonflower Martini…

IMG_8276

One Cranberry Orange Margarita…

IMG_8281

And one Melon Margarita later…

IMG_8283

(Don’t judge me.

They had a 6 page cocktail list and tequila soaked cranberries…. I had to.)

IMG_8280

There were some crab cakes.

Some smiley face crab cakes… and yes, that was on purpose.

IMG_8282

Crab cakes weren’t supposed to be served that time of day, or at all in the tavern for that matter….. but when you make friends with the bartender?

Anything is possible.

IMG_8286

An afternoon well spent, we poured ourselves out the door.

IMG_8288

And lamented the fact we wouldn’t be back anytime soon.

IMG_8290

Even mid facelift..

She’s an elegant old broad.

White Mountains trip… Day 7. The beginning of the end.

On the 7th and final full day of our trip, the husband woke up and said no more hiking, climbing and jumping rocks.

Or rather his back did…

thing

So we did what any (not so) able bodied tourists would do…

We had a long lazy breakfast…

IMG_8102

And resort hopped the day away.

IMG_8242

Our first stop was a brand new place perched at the bottom of Mount Washington.

IMG_8232

While it didn’t look like much from the front, the views out back were wide open.

IMG_8231

With a large deck…

IMG_8226

Ample seating, and a fire pit to take it all in.

IMG_8227

Inside there was a nice dining room..

IMG_8218

Filled with old photos…

IMG_8219

And history of the area.

IMG_8221

IMG_8220

But it was the lounge and bar that drew our attention.

(You’re shocked, I know.)

IMG_8196

It had my kind of moose head mounted over the mantle…

IMG_8199

And a wall of windows…

IMG_8202

That made for a damn near perfect spot to drink.

IMG_8213

So we drank.

(You’re surprised, I know.)

IMG_8197

My Thyme In Mumbai please…

IMG_8205

Yes, I believe that tasted like another one.

IMG_8207

The bartender/waitress was a hoot and had us sample a new hard cider by North Country called Squashed. I’m not a fan of all that pumpkin spiced crap but this was heavenly. Light, crisp with delicate undertones… I was hooked. Until I researched it and realized you could only buy it by visiting their tasting room.

Future road trip itinerary – check!

Thinking it might be a good idea to have some food to soak up the alcohol, I opted for a crab cake that was the size of a large saucer and pure crab. It was sublime.

IMG_8209

Tomato bisque for the husband.

IMG_8210

Which was small, but delightfully rich and creamy.

IMG_8211

Bacon wrapped pan seared sea scallops for him…

IMG_8212

Grilled chicken club wrap for me.

Good bye diet.

IMG_8203

We soaked in the wall of windows a little longer…

IMG_8230

Then headed out….

IMG_8236

To resort #2.

(You’re welcome food people. Breakfast and lunch!)
