Have you ever felt like you were being stalked?

.

According to my stats I’m on a path to having the highest monthly views since I got here four years ago.

.

.

Granted I’ve been blogging about fascinating topics in January like the junk in our basement, crab balls and masturbating walruses… but still. The spike in readers seems a bit extreme.

And because I was curious which posts were popular, I checked.

.

.

Turns out they all were.

But only once.

.

.

I’m sure it’s just spammers, but most of the views are from the U.S., not India or Pakistan…. so it makes me wonder which one of you could be stalking my blog and searching my archives for pearls of wisdom like ‘Of Slime and Flies’?

Fess up. There’s no shame in the admission, we all need a hobby.

🤣

.

Random tidbits

.

Read the following listing carefully.

.

.

Possibilities of seasonal views. Which means – From your heavily wooded lot, in the dead of winter when all the trees are bare, if you stand on the edge of your bathroom sink and crane your neck to the north? You might see a tiny section of ice covered pond water.

Technically they’re not lying, but still.

.

.

Lord Dudley Mountcatten loves his toys. He loves them so much he shreds an average of one a week.

.

.

It’s a veritable catnip mouse slaughterhouse around here.

.

.

That sums it up nicely.

.

.

Do I need that?

Now that you mention it… I might.

.

.

This sounds like the perfect summer cocktail.

Cheers!

.

Of gutters and baby woodchucks.

.

Last weekend I was reading on the barn porch, enjoying the view of the neighbor’s farm…

.

.

And of our other neighbor walking by….

.

.

When suddenly my view changed.

.

.

Because the husband decided it was time ( after I bugged him for 7… Yes, 7 years. ) to put up a gutter.

.

.

I’ll spare you the four hour nightmare of angles, cutting, bracketing, ladder placement and yes a good bit of cursing as well…

.

.

And get right to the cute stuff.

.

.

A baby woodchuck.

.

.

Make that two baby woodchucks. It’s summer and the little scampers are peaking out from under the barn. Totally adorable. And much more fun to watch than this…

.

.

Especially since the gutter leaked like Hell the first time it rained.

.

Thank goodness for friends.

.

When your ceiling looks like this?

.

.

And your fireplace looks like this?

.

.

You call in the cavalry.

.

.

Or rather two friends who aren’t afraid of heights.

.

.

Then you buy lots of this…

.

.

And hope they can find the source of the leaks.

.

.

A full day was spent searching, stripping, caulking and replacing shingles….

.

.

In less than balmy weather.

.

.

The view out my window was interesting at times :

.

.

And 7 chilly hours plus one large spaghetti lunch later? They think they solved the problem…. but I guess time will tell.

.

And so it begins.

.

We chose a local company and our big barn will finally get some color in his cheeks.

An oil based stain was matched to baby barn’s red paint… and white trim will finish him off.

I’ve been waiting 8 years for this…  so, yay.

The painters showed up the other day to pressure wash off the black mold. They thought this would be a quick prep, saying it would only take a few hours.

.

.

10 gallons of bleach, one broken pressure washer, an auxiliary pump and 8 hours later…

.

.

They recalculated and said they wouldn’t be able to get it all off as promised.

Which we told them would be the case, as we’d tried ourselves and failed.

But they got a lot more than we managed, and it looks better.

Of course they had to move all the trim wood we’d bought to do the porch, so this is now my afternoon cocktail view.

.

.

Not ideal.

.

But hopefully it’s more temporary than my husband’s so called temporary doors.

Country living perks.

We live in a rural area of Maine…. and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Peace and quiet.

Visiting wildlife.

And beautiful scenery.

Some days more than others…

Living across the road from an organic vegetable farm has it’s benefits.

And fresh veggies aren’t the half of it.

Right now, the poppies are in bloom.

Glorious, riotous bloom.

And I’m enjoying every minute of it.

I mean really….

How can you not?

Resort hopping Part 3… The Eagle Mountain House.

Last on our list of resorts that day was an old and well known establishment.

IMG_8323

New England is full of quirky places like this.

IMG_8322

With a nice big porch…

IMG_8303

And a nice big view…

IMG_8305

It was a pleasant spot to end the day.

IMG_8304

Charming…

IMG_8306

Cozy…

IMG_8309

And full of antiques….

IMG_8307

It was instantly welcoming.

IMG_8308

I can’t say it any better than that.

IMG_8312

The bar.

Oh, stuff it Dorothy.

You know us better by now.

IMG_8317

But amusing sign aside…

IMG_8311

The mushroom risotto cake appetizer left a lot to be desired, as did the cranberry gin fizz.

A definite meh.

IMG_8318

We only stayed for one round and then headed into the gift shop… where I saw a wine tag that made me laugh.

IMG_8316

As well as…

Are you ready for this?

A bucket of ducks!

IMG_8313

Christ on a cracker….enough with the rubber ducks.

This was getting creepy.

IMG_8320

Bidding farewell to the hotel, and the ducks….

IMG_8321

It took all I could do to convince the husband he could not go rummage in the establishment’s old slate roofed barn.

IMG_8325

The mere thought of not being able to gather up all the unloved tools and rusted treasures that must be stored in there? Practically ruined his night…

Resort hopping Part 2. The Mountain View Grand.

Hidden away in tiny Whitefield, New Hampshire is a gem.

IMG_8254

A sprawling hotel…

IMG_8255

Packed with old world charm.

Sadly they were renovating the front entrance when we visited so we had to sneak in the side.

IMG_8267

Look at those doors!

IMG_8258

Chess anyone?

IMG_8260

I’m a sucker for a good porch.

IMG_8265

And this one did not disappoint.

IMG_8259

I could happily plop here with a good book….

IMG_8263

A pitcher of margaritas…

IMG_8262

And never leave.

IMG_8269

Back inside, I checked out the wall of history…

IMG_8268

And some great old photographs…

IMG_8266

IMG_8273

While the husband continued his “I shall pee everywhere I can in Western Maine and New Hampshire” challenge with an upscale rest room this time.

And speaking of rest rooms…

IMG_8270

Even I had to check out the pink marble in theirs.

But ooh la la…

IMG_8272

There were private sinks inside the ladies room stalls.

Is that some chic shit or what?

IMG_8285

Moving on through the lounge…

IMG_8275

We found a dining room… and the place where we would spend the next two hours.

IMG_8284

The bar.

Don’t look surprised, you knew it was coming.

IMG_8279

One Lemonflower Martini…

IMG_8276

One Cranberry Orange Margarita…

IMG_8281

And one Melon Margarita later…

IMG_8283

(Don’t judge me.

They had a 6 page cocktail list and tequila soaked cranberries…. I had to.)

IMG_8280

There were some crab cakes.

Some smiley face crab cakes… and yes, that was on purpose.

IMG_8282

Crab cakes weren’t supposed to be served that time of day, or at all in the tavern for that matter….. but when you make friends with the bartender?

Anything is possible.

IMG_8286

An afternoon well spent, we poured ourselves out the door.

IMG_8288

And lamented the fact we wouldn’t be back anytime soon.

IMG_8290

Even mid facelift..

She’s an elegant old broad.

White Mountains trip Day 6.. shopping and scenery.

Bethel is a lovely little mountain village with some quirky shops.

IMG_8157

With a heavy accent on the Yeti for some reason.

IMG_8152

We stopped in a gallery….

IMG_8153

Filled with local artists…

IMG_8154

Moose…

IMG_8155

And numerous paintings of vegetables.

Thanks, but I prefer them on my plate… not my walls.

IMG_8158

Heading out of town we passed a gorgeous old Victorian.

IMG_8162

And a stately old colonial.

A home like that would be my dream… that, and enough money to buy one of those grand old dames and update their interiors.

New houses have no charm.

IMG_8182

We cruised along enjoying the scenery…

IMG_8176

And the views.

IMG_8180

Damn, could you imagine having that for your back yard?

IMG_8164

Not too shabby.

A little farther down the road the husband spotted some new construction and turned in to check them out.

IMG_8165

By the look of the views? I knew we couldn’t afford it.

IMG_8169

The properties were a good size.

IMG_8168

With special attention paid to make sure no home blocked another’s view.

IMG_8171

So if I win the lottery?

IMG_8166

Look for me living here in the autumn.

Number 15 looks just fine…

IMG_8177

We have a version of this sign over our way, so it tickled me to see one in the mountains.

IMG_8188

Yes, those really are all the names of Maine towns.

IMG_8094

Day 6 done, we headed back to our resort for dinner at Camp.

IMG_8104

I liked the upscale rustic theme…

IMG_8099

Sitting under a lighted canoe…

IMG_8101

And a yummy salt brined citrus roasted chicken dinner.

Cathedral Ledge Part 2.

IMG_7676

Mountain views.

IMG_7680

Valley views.

IMG_7688

Vibrant autumn color.

IMG_7683

And love locks… Cathedral ledge has it all.

IMG_7692

Even lovers with a sense of humor.

IMG_7686

It was glorious… and that was only the front half.

IMG_7694

Walking along the sides, we made friends.

IMG_7695

Took 100 more pictures….

IMG_7713

And simply marveled at the beauty of nature.

IMG_7702

Even the husband was quiet.

IMG_7726

Honestly, there’s only so many times you can say wow.

IMG_7697

It really was a special spot.

This way?

IMG_7706

Beautiful.

IMG_7737

That way?

Fabulous.

IMG_7732

Gaze in wonder.

Take picture.

Repeat.

IMG_7746

There were rocks!

IMG_7741

And trees!

IMG_7752

And they made me realize how blessed I am to live in a truly wonderful part of the world.

IMG_7751

We made one final lap along the fence line…

IMG_7764

And strolled a few final steps across those marvelous rocks…

IMG_7767

I tried again…. unsuccessfully… to get a double selfie where the husband actually looks at the camera.

But no matter.

IMG_7742

We took one last look and bid goodbye to a place I’d revisit in a heartbeat next time we’re in the area.
