White Mountains trip Day 2….. Evans Notch.

Heading back to the resort after a full day of exploring, we decided to drive through.. and over… Evans Notch.

407

It’s basically a straight up ride that cuts through a mountain to the other side.

414

We had it all to ourselves and saw some of the most vibrant color of our trip.

428

Pictures don’t do it justice, so ride along with us.

Just watch out for chipmunks.

I wish we’d been there a week earlier when the reds and oranges had been popping…

417

But it was still quite a show.

424

When we reached the top…

It thinned out a little.

436

Bare granite on the right…

434

Full foliage behind the sign.

438

And a mix on the left…. with the sun setting in the distance.

450

Heading back down was just as pretty…

446

And it was nice to see I’m not the only one who  ❤’s  the mountains.

Colors and critters.

Looking across the street to our neighbor’s organic vegetable farm is always interesting.

IMG_1507

But this time of year, it’s downright beautiful.

IMG_1508

Who knew artichokes could be so pretty?

And when our neighbor has wood chips delivered….

IMG_1463

HE HAS WOODCHIPS DELIVERED.

IMG_1468

When you’re a farmer’s child?

You don’t need no stinkin’ sandbox.

hF7B9C21B

On the critter front,

IMG_1434

We’re down to one lone woodchuck.

IMG_1437

He’s still fat…

IMG_1442

And still clumsy…

IMG_1423

And still hangs out on our deck once in a while. But it’s autumn, and all his brothers and sisters are finding dens and getting ready for winter. I doubt even this one will be here much longer.

Sigh…

IMG_1460

Autumn also means the deer are changing into their darker winter coats. One summer coated hold out is on the right for comparison.

IMG_1498

A murder of crows have now discovered our bird bath.

Why are they called a murder?

The Oxford English Dictionary suggests this is an allusion to the crow’s traditional association with violent death or its harsh and raucous cry.  If you’ve ever heard dozens of agitated crows in full cry, it really does sound as if they’re yelling bloody murder.

As long as they don’t murder me in my sleep, I don’t care what you call them.

Uh oh.

IMG_1511

And finally, we have a new skunk in town.

IMG_1513

I admit I never really paid attention to skunk tails before, but we’ve had so many different families this year I’ve gotten to recognize them by their individual patterns.

This is Tippy.

IMG_1516

Brilliantly named for the white tip on her tail.

Is she really a she?

I neither know, nor care to get close enough to find out.

It’s starting to look pretty in my neck of the woods.

It’s Fall y’all!

085

Autumn is my favorite time of year.

Crisp air, apples, pumpkins and fiery trees….

IMG_E6517

And though I live in New England…

IMG_E6525

And see Mother Nature’s glorious show every October….

Img_4230

I never tire of it.

Img_0505

I’m a certified leaf peeper…

Img_4257

So when I crash my car into one of those pretty colored trees because I’m driving home one handed snapping pictures for my blog?

Img_0729

I’m telling the police it’s your fault.

004

And will expect you lot to start a GoFundMe page for my car repairs and hospital bills.

Did you know….

The name of the novel that inspired the film Blade Runner was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

I do because…..

GUEST_093223f4-e3c8-4e44-a847-a9c0c2030952

I find it rather disturbing.

As should you…

Did you know…

La Brea means The Tar?  So when you talk about ‘the La Brea Tar Pits’ in California you are actually saying The The Tar Tar Pits.

Talk about overkill.

Did you know…

Hindu men once believed it was unlucky to marry a third time so they avoided misfortune by marrying a tree? It was then burned, freeing them up to marry again.

I imagine it went like this:

Did you know…

Did you know…

Due to a different gravitational force, if you weigh 200lbs on earth….. you would weigh 76 lbs on Mars?

Come on Elon.

Momma needs a  trip to Mars.

Yeah, you’ll need to put that down first.

Did you know….

An octopus’s testicles are located in it’s head?

He also can remove his spermatophore-loaded mating arm and give it to a female if she’s hungry and likely to eat him.

I wish WordPress had Smell-O-Vision.

I really do.

Because it’s apple blossom time at Casa River.

IMG_4780

And next to lilacs, they’re my favorite natural scent.

We had a long wet spring….

IMG_4835

And now even the smaller trees are bursting with blooms.

IMG_4782

Every little branch is covered in fragrant blossoms…. and when the breeze blows?

Pure heaven.

But since Smell-O-Vision isn’t available, you’ll have to take my word for it.

It’s that good.

Fun fact : Every tree we’ve planted in the past 15 years?

Dead.

dead-trees-dead

I don’t know why… they just died. Some lasted a few years, others mere months.

But this apple tree?

IMG_4856

The one I didn’t plant? That must have sprung up from a floating seed….

Grows 3 feet every summer.

And this year, it’s bee nirvana.

what-did-the-i6wffr

Sorry..

I had to.

Funky trees, metal warrior women and some dinosaur dung.

Tlaquepaque – the sequel.

Trees.

IMG_3784

They were everywhere in this quaint shopping village.

IMG_3756

And allowed to go pretty much anywhere…

IMG_3757

Which was environmentally friendly…

IMG_3791

And at times, down right comical.

5a8f48433c0ed6a33536bc21dc1631d2

There was a strange bird with red peppers on it’s head…

IMG_3758

And naked warrior women made out of metal.

IMG_3760 (2)

Also with birds.

Tell the truth…. how many of you men actually noticed the bird?

Oh-No-You-Di-Idnt-Funny-Bird-Meme-Image

We walked by Albert again…

IMG_3761

And into a store that sold dinosaur poo.

IMG_3763

Supposedly authentic… which caused my husband to snort.

Like you could you tell?

IMG_3779

The village was lovely.

IMG_3776

With a distinct Spanish flavor.

IMG_3786

Which probably explains why the French cafe where we had lunch was so absolutely un-French.

IMG_3765

It had a slight Gallic atmosphere.

IMG_3766

And yes, French Onion soup.

IMG_3769

But the closest the menu came to French cuisine was my uninspired, build it yourself chicken salad sandwich on a croissant.

IMG_3770

The husband’s?

IMG_3771

Might have had Grey Poupon.

Ooh La La Lame.

IMG_3780

Finishing our circuit, we stopped at a Native American jewelry store. The prices were high, and though tempted…. I was going to walk out empty handed until the husband started talking.

When the husband starts talking? I know we’re going to be there a while and resumed shopping. Seriously this time.

So it really was his fault I spent a large chunk of change on this bracelet.

IMG_E4009 (2)

Yup.

His fault.

bd491e8f7b149155020a70d151e7c3081f7220675c51ae3fdb5a81b826710b7b

On our way out, a giant aloe vera plant threatened to swallow him whole while he gazed at a statue…

IMG_3790

No. Not really…

But I totally would have posted that video to YouTube if it had.

IMG_3787

Said statue.

IMG_3797

Fountain.

Or tiny public bathtub, tough call.

IMG_3798

Cat statue, directly opposite a pot filled with….

IMG_3796

That can’t be a coincidence.

Weirdo Christmas trees.

I have a friend  ( Yes, I really do have them. They exist! And not just in my mind, so there.)  who is quite crafty, artistic and creative. This extends to her holiday decorating and every year she has a different Christmas tree.

And when I say different?

I mean different.

One year, it was made of driftwood.

003 (375x500)

The next?  Pine cones.

Copy (2) of 004

Then giant free floating balls.

IMG_1802

Which aren’t usually the balls one wants to have, but these were pretty cool.

IMG_1415

Some years there are normal trees…

1 (375x500)

Which are almost disappointing.

b 002 (500x375)

But then we’re back to fabulously odd.

Copy (1) of 012

And the next year there’s a canopy tree hovering over your head.

One season it was made from recycled CD’s and put out the light of 100 suns.

DSC00302

(Seriously, this thing could have powered a small town.)

DSC00307

When you visit my friend’s house at Christmas, you never know what you’ll get… which is kind of a hoot.

So we went over last weekend and saw the 2018 version.

IMG_1750

To which my reaction was…. meh.

Slightly Seussian with the bare branch and one green ball, but not the most inspirational.

Oh well, there’s always next year.

The Mount… grounds.

As lovely as the house was, I almost enjoyed strolling the grounds more.

That being said, we really don’t stroll enough these days. There’s a distinct lack of strolling going on and it probably explains a lot. One should never underestimate the benefits of a good stroll…

Alligator optional.

You exit the dining room onto a huge stone porch which was turned into a little cafe.

IMG_9719

Sorry food picture people, they had stopped serving lunch by the time we arrived. But the view was pretty sweet even with a growling stomach.

IMG_9713

Talk about a nice spot for your morning coffee…

IMG_9720

Ole Edith knew her stuff when it came to landscaping as well.

IMG_9723

I can’t imagine how long it takes to keep those shrubs trimmed.

IMG_9725

And this was just the porch area.

IMG_9726

We strolled, and I still hadn’t gotten far enough away to get a nice shot of the house.

IMG_9727

But the trees?

IMG_9728

Oh, good Lord…

The trees!

They were beautiful!

IMG_9731

I couldn’t stop photographing those.

IMG_9735

Absolutely magnificent from every angle.

IMG_9751

I love me some trees.

IMG_9732

Again, the house photo alluded me.

IMG_9733

But the grounds were lovely.

IMG_9759

And finally…

IMG_9753

The strolling paid off.

IMG_9722

And I got the money shot.

IMG_9750

The Mount.

IMG_9765

In all her glory.

IMG_9785 (1)

There were more gardens…

IMG_9781

And grounds…

IMG_9776

And wooded paths…

IMG_9784 (1)

And shots of the house…

IMG_9772

Some in better focus than others.

IMG_9780

(Note – do not shoot selfies straight into the sun.)

But it was near closing time and we had to say goodbye to the trees.

*Sob*

IMG_9771

On the walk back to the car we did see one more piece of modern art for the husband to puzzle over…

IMG_9792

$18,000 if you’re interested.

IMG_9793

Then it was the stables…

IMG_9794

Heck, they were beautiful.

I’d live there.

IMG_9795

And we were done.

Until the vacation next post…
