Vintage recycling.

.

Since I multi purposed our giant crock as a trash can, I decided I wanted something equally fun and antiquey for returnables.

You would think shopping in my husband’s vast array of crap stuff would yield the appropriate receptacle, but sadly nothing was found. Which is when my spouse gleefully suggested we visit the antique mall.

.

.

I was on a mission and didn’t dilly dally. The same can not be said for my spouse.

.

.

I moved him quickly away from this horror…

.

.

Because right now the only thing the barn Mahal doesn’t have is a kitchen sink… and I wasn’t taking any chances.

.

.

Fresh lobster made us laugh. There’s nothing worse than cheeky crustaceans.

.

.

I had my eye on that wagon to the right. But at $520 it seemed a bit pricey for empty beer bottles.

.

.

Even the chicken thought so.

And then I found it…

.

.

Buried in the back and full of oars.

.

.

$50 later…. the old barrel with original lid… made a perfect returnable container.

.

Well… time told.

.

And I don’t like what it had to say.

.

.

Not one damn bit.

Sadly after all the roofing repairs my husband and his friends did the other day… nothing changed.

It’s still leaking.

.

.

So we went back up in the attic and realized the wood and shingles they replaced the other day probably weren’t high enough up on the roof.

.

.

So now our ceiling looks even worse.

.

.

And though he thinks he knows where to make the next repair?

.

.

It was on the day our first N’or Easter started blowing in… so I doubt it will be anytime soon.

.

.

Random things and thoughts.

.

What passes for news in my town?

.

.

Oh no! The poor girl. Being roosterless is a terrible thing.

Or so I’ve heard…

A while back I made a Facebook Veterans Day post with some photos of the hubby in uniform. I found these after the fact.

.

.

In Beirut, Lebanon October 1983 with the bombed out Marine barracks in the background.

He took 12 bodies out of that building.

.

A horrible day.

.

.

This one was in Newport, Rhode Island (not sure of the year)  He was receiving a commendation for saving a man’s life.

That’s my husband. And yes, I’m proud.

.

.

A frosty sunrise photo down by the river.

.

.

Okay, maybe you didn’t used to drink in the woods…. but I was a teenager who grew up on an Island in Maine. We drank everywhere.

.

And finally, an update.

.

.

Yay.

I love a happy ending.

.

As good an explanation as any.

.

There was a post on our local Facebook page the other day and I thought it warranted a second look.

.

.

Strange signs appearing on your lawn?

My town has an answer.

.

.

Makes sense.

Pee here! Not there…

.

.

I think we all know a few candidates who should have been left far, far behind.

.

.

Bub.

It’s a Maine thing… never mind.

.

.

Aliens!

That’s a blog worthy answer right there.

.

.

Even Google doesn’t have a clue. How often does that happen?

.

Backyard wildlife, homicide division.

.

Mother and Bambi are chowing down regularly and trying to lay on extra winter pounds.

.

.

But sadly I was right about the blue eyes fading. Once this little one grows up we won’t be able to distinguish him/her so easily.

.

IMG_3602

.

But look who’s made our backyard his new hunting ground….

.

IMG_3615

.

A juvenile Coopers Hawk.

He perches on the bird feeder pole and waits patiently for lunch to drop in.

.

IMG_3650

.

I got excited when I saw this:

.

IMG_3580

.

And was seriously hoping mother red squirrel had met her doom…

.

IMG_3581

.

But unfortunately it was a dove.

.

IMG_3582

.

Better luck next time guy.

.

What the flock?

.

Birds.

You never know who’ll show up.

.

IMG_3585

.

Turkeys on Thanksgiving Day? That takes balls.

.

IMG_3587

.

They’re even pushing the envelope by ripping up every scrap of weed block landscaping paper I laid under our tree.

.

IMG_3590

.

And blue jays.

.

IMG_3595

.

All of a sudden, a large flock of blue jays.

.

IMG_3596

.

There were blue jays everywhere.

.

IMG_3599

.

And the greedy little devils wiped out four feeders in no time flat.

.

IMG_3592

.

Birds.

Sometimes annoying, but always photo worthy.

.

.

Still driving me nuts.

.

I came home from the store the other day and stepped up on our kitchen landing.

.

.

Which is when I saw it.

Do you see it?

.

.

Let me give you a hint…

.

.

We hadn’t seen the little red bastards for a while, but it was right there.

.

.

A stolen apple wedge. Prominently placed where I couldn’t help but see it.

.

.

That bitch is taunting me now.

.

Foxes and turkeys and deer, oh my.

.

Foxes.

.

IMG_3505

.

Our pair has been absent of late, but now they’re back.

.

IMG_3503

.

Turkeys.

They’ve discovered the deer grain bowl and make short work of it.

.

IMG_3556

.

I hate to say it…

.

IMG_3557

.

But I think his/her eyes are starting to turn brown.

.

IMG_3559

.

I read that could happen.

.

IMG_3558

.

But was hoping he/she would hold on to them a little longer.

.

Timing is everything.

.

And it’s always bad at Casa River.

.

IMG_3514

.

Yesterday morning I saw that rat bastard red squirrel.

.

IMG_3513

.

She was running all over our roof and gutter probably looking for a way back into the house.

.

IMG_3515

.

I chased her off with the broom, but 10 minutes later she was back. She hung around for another half hour or so and for once….

I wish she’d stayed a little longer.

.

IMG_3487

.

Well, hello there.

.

IMG_3488

.

Your timing was awful, but please come back another day.

I have multiple squirrel recipes to share.
