One pregnancy too many.

.

I fear for our old, always pregnant, doe.

She had a very late fawn this year and I think it’s taken it’s toll.

.

IMG_3270

.

We’ve watch her age and slow down over the past few years, but now?

.

IMG_3274

.

The poor girl is skeletal.

.

IMG_3272

.

She comes every night for grain and apples, and is now showing up during the day for lunch…. which yes, I provide. She literally just stands there, looking in the window and waiting to be served. How can I not?

.

IMG_3278

.

But I think this last Bambi was just too much for her, and I doubt she’ll survive the winter.

.

.

Hopefully blue eyes will continue us to visit after she’s gone.

Life goes on….

.

When ya gotta go….

.

Sometimes you just have to go. Which, when on the road during a global pandemic, can be a challenge.

Yesterday the husband had to physically enter his office for the first time since March to pick up some paperwork, so we took the scenic route which added a half hour to the hour long drive. The sun was shining, the leaves were turning…. life was good. Until those 2 large glasses of iced tea I had with lunch kicked in.

I don’t know what’s it like in your part if the world, but here in Maine a lot of the convenience stores, gas stations and fast food places have closed their rest rooms to customers for fear of spreading the virus.

It took us 4 stops to find a Burger King that welcomed people with full bladders. And by the look of the pictures on the doors? I wasn’t the only one in dire need.

.

.

.

Natural beauty.

.

Have you ever noticed how quickly sunsets change?

.

IMG_3188

.

I see a pretty one out the window…

.

IMG_3189

.

And by the time I grab my camera it’s almost over. Rather like life….

.

IMG_3190

.

Fall came early this year.

.

IMG_3301

.

And while I do love the colors, peak foliage came too soon.

.

IMG_3302

.

What was supposed to pop in October, popped in September.

.

.

And as much as I’m ready for this year to be over, this is one part I wish would last a little longer.

.

CSA and grocery store horrors.

.

Another veggie bonanza.

.

.

Tomatoes, beets, leek, basil, carrots, parsley, squash, radish, chickory, spinach, Korean melon and yes… the dreaded kale.

It’s lovely having fresh organic veggies right out of the ground and buying less at the grocery store’s produce section.

.

.

Tastes like an artichoke. Then why not buy an artichoke? I’m so tired of wannabe food.

Be what you are…. and be happy!

.

.

No.

Burgers are not made from plants! Not in my world anyway. But did you notice the oh so cleverly named Incogmeato only has 32% less fat than the real thing? Where’s the other 68% come from… lard coated arugula?

I’ll pass.

.

.

Right Rice made from vegetables is wrong.

So wrong in fact, check out the bottom left corner of the package. It’s made from chickpeas, peas and.. rice.

Rice made from rice.

What a novel idea.

And then, because I live and shop in Maine? This was also available for purchase:

.

.

A map of mooses.

(Meese?)

Big goofy looking things with horns, often seen in the company of a squirrel.

You can’t miss them.

.

Motherhood can be rough

.

We hadn’t seen much of mother red squirrel lately, which after the last pregnant photo I took of her.. was a very good thing.

.

IMG_3260

.

But she showed up yesterday…

.

IMG_3262

.

Looking kind of rough. Motherhood must be taking its toll this time around.

.

IMG_3265

.

Now if only I could coordinate her visits with this new addition to the backyard wildlife sightings….

.

IMG_3257

.

He could solve all our squirrel problems in one fell swoop.

.

IMG_3256

.

A dear-able.

.

The late season Bambi is back and not looking quite so evil this time.

.

.

Eat up little one, winter is coming and you’ve got a lot of pounds to pack on before the white stuff falls.

.

.

The big buck was here as well.

.

.

As was his son from last year whose felt is starting to shed.

.

.

Hard to believe we still have a spotted fawn this late in the year. Makes me worry.

.

.

Fall is here and with such a terribly dry summer the pickings aren’t good.

.

.

The rut will be here shortly.

.

.

And this guy will be very busy.

.

Risking life and limb for my blog.

.

Never let it be said I don’t put myself in harm’s way for my loyal readers.

.

.

Yes, I drove home from the store one handed the other day just so I could share a few shots of our beautiful fall foliage in Maine.

.

.

We had a very hot dry summer…

.

.

So the leaves aren’t as vibrant as they could be.

.

.

But it’s still a pretty sweet show.

.

.

Minus the spots and streaks on my dirty windshield that is.

.

.

No small animals were killed while I swerved left for that burning bush…

.

.

And swerved right for that perfect sugar maple.

.

.

Good thing we don’t get much traffic on our road.

.

.

Or police cruisers.

.

.

Ah, autumn in New England.

.

.

If you’ve never experienced it….

.

.

What are you waiting for?

.

.

I love my town.

.

And what passes for local news on their Facebook page.

.

.

No, I don’t know what’s happening either. But turtles are involved so it must be good.

.

.

Goat shooing happens more often than you think here.

.

.

Now this is news!

While we do live in Maine, moose are more commonly seen up north. Having one stroll our river is a sure way to fire up the locals.

.

.

This is another type of wildlife sighting altogether. A traveling donkey who spends a few nights on your lawn by request. Made by a local artist, his name is Mr. H.

.

.

Goats are still on the loose.

Clearly their walkabout is causing concern.

.

.

But in happier news, the slandering chicken is back home on the drivay.

Perhaps if her owner learned how to spell she’d stay home more often.
