The Photo Ark

.

Have you heard of Joel Sartore?

.

.

Arctic Fox.

If not, let me rectify that.

.

.

.

Tiger Striped Tree Frog.

Joel has made it his mission in life to photograph the approximately 12,000 species living in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries.

.

.

Brown Throated Sloth.

But Joel’s photographs are different.

.

.

Springbok Mantis.

They’re special.

.

.

Mandrill.

Because they’re portraits.

.

.

Spectacled Eiders.

Stunning portraits of glorious diversity.

.

.

California Sea Lion.

Joel believes if we see these marvelous creatures… we’ll feel something.

.

.

Andean Condor.

We’ll care.

.

.

Sumatran Rhinoceros.

And if we care, we’ll fight to preserve not only them, but the habitats they need to thrive.

.

.

DeBrazza’s Monkey.

Joel is my hero. And I’ve bought all 3 of his incredible books.

.

.

As I make my way through them, I’m going to share some of his work.

Because they make me feel.

Because they make me care.

Not all of the animals are beautiful.

.

.

Common Warthog.

But all of them are perfect… and worth protecting.

.

Foxes and turkeys and deer, oh my.

.

Foxes.

.

.

Our pair has been absent of late, but now they’re back.

.

IMG_3503

.

Turkeys.

They’ve discovered the deer grain bowl and make short work of it.

Riveting turkey video for your viewing pleasure.

.

Blue eyed Bambi and mom.

.

IMG_3556

.

I hate to say it…

.

IMG_3557

.

But I think his/her eyes are starting to turn brown.

.

IMG_3559

.

I read that could happen.

.

IMG_3558

.

But was hoping he/she would hold on to them a little longer.

.

Timing is everything.

.

And it’s always bad at Casa River.

.

IMG_3514

.

Yesterday morning I saw that rat bastard red squirrel.

.

IMG_3513

.

She was running all over our roof and gutter probably looking for a way back into the house.

.

IMG_3515

.

I chased her off with the broom, but 10 minutes later she was back. She hung around for another half hour or so and for once….

I wish she’d stayed a little longer.

.

IMG_3487

.

Well, hello there.

.

IMG_3488

.

Your timing was awful, but please come back another day.

I have multiple squirrel recipes to share.

.

Giving them the bird.

.

Today the turkeys beat the deer to the buffet.

.

.

Come on mom, I’m hungry.

.

.

Bambi wanted in.

.

.

But was decidedly out numbered.

.

.

Look at mommas face.

She is not pleased.

.

.

But she gives in and tries to approach.

.

.

Nope.

Even when Bambi runs at them they just scatter and regroup.

.

.

Still hungry…

.

.

Bambi finds an alternative source.

.

.

She’s baaaack.

.

I thought maybe we’d seen the last of her.

.

IMG_3303

.

But no, she was out back stealing chopped up deer apples yesterday.

.

IMG_3306

.

She was back on the patio table.

.

IMG_3352

.

And there’s only one reason for that. Do you know how sick and tired I am of finding small pieces of rotted apple every time I sit down?

.

IMG_3356

.

And then of course there’s the poo.

.

IMG_3357

.

She leaves it there on purpose, I know it.

.

IMG_3337

.

And may I just say, sipping from puddles of rain water filled with your own poo?

.

IMG_3338

.

Not the least bit appetizing.

.

And please note… in that last picture? She is literally pooping. Am I a great photo journalist or what!

.

Keeping a (blue) eye on Bambi.

.

It’s been fun watching this little fawn grow up.

.

IMG_3435

.

Although sadly we’re watching his mother decline at the same time.

.

IMG_3434

.

Those blue eyes just slay me.

.

IMG_3436

.

Of all the deer we’ve had over the years, this is our first blue eyed visitor.

.

IMG_3439

.

Little one stays close to mom.

.

IMG_3441

.

Hope she’s around long enough to teach him what he needs to know…
