Winter blues….

No, not the depression.

unnamed

Sorry, not the brothers either.

I’m talking about the colors.

Living in Maine, most of our winters are white. But there’s also a lot of beautiful blue…

IMG_2795

And when a storm is moving in?

IMG_2796

It’s really quite lovely.

IMG_2798

These were all taken through my dirty winter windows last month, so be kind.

IMG_2800

But spots and all..

IMG_2805

You have to admit winter blues are pretty.

IMG_2803

Even the ones that turn out kind of weird.

IMG_2756

What do you do when it snows a foot during a pandemic quarantine?

Well, if you live in Maine….

You have a snow sculpture contest!

That strange looking blob turned into this:

A goldfinch on a nest.

It gets my vote….

But here are some other entries.

Small snowman.

Snow frog.

Large snowman.

Musical snowman.

Upside down snowman.

Snow horse.

Snow bunny.

Snow pig?

Snow mermaid.

And a snow public health advisement…

Someone posted this as well …..

I love it, but have a feeling it was pulled off the net and not a local entry.

A+ for originality though.

Cheers!

Ah… spring.

Spring in Maine looks a little different than most places….

Because we woke up to this today.

We didn’t have nearly enough snow this winter, but now? Almost a flippin’ foot fell overnight.

Daffodils and tulips?

Not quite yet.

And because all that heavy wet snow knocked out our satellite feed and someone can’t stand to be without the news for 5 minutes?

Yeah.

This.

At 6:30 am.

Looks like fun, no?

Ah…

Spring!

A little catch up… the baby barn, a sunrise and some deer.

Now that the Virginia vacation saga is finally over, it’s time to clear out the photo files.

If you remember… before we left for the Cape Cod vacation in November, the husband was desperately trying to finish the remodel on our baby barn from Hell before the snow started flying.

IMG_8345

He started putting the siding on….

IMG_8371

Which was a nightmare of non squared corners and uneven ground.

IMG_8377

Yeah, there was a lot of that.

His answer? Plant a shrub in front of it.

IMG_8375

He was still using his 1950’s power tools and probably wishing for a larger wheelbarrow.

IMG_8378

Siding around the window resulted in some very colorful language.

IMG_8379

As did turning the 3rd corner where things didn’t exactly line up.

Unfortunately that’s as far as he got before the weather turned….

And now I have to stare at this split personality horror show until spring.

IMG_2912

In other news, our neighbor and her daughter fed our deer while we were gone.

IMG_1849

She sent me this picture while we were in Williamsburg, and wanted me to know the child took her responsibility seriously.

And for that she was rewarded.

IMG_2548

Flowers for mom and a thank you deer for her daughter.

IMG_2549

That little guy cost me a fortune but he was hand made and too damned cute to resist. Look at those feet!

IMG_2519

It snowed right after we got back.

IMG_2520

But the white stuff sure does make a nice contrast for the sunrise.

IMG_2521

We were happy to see our resident buck was still around.

IMG_2522

He’s an impressive fellow….

IMG_2525

And clearly his women agree.

IMG_2526

He’s got quite a little harem going.

IMG_2528

With 4 fawns that we know of.

Funny thing is….. as much as I love to travel, it’s sights like these that always make me glad to be home again.

The one thing you definitely don’t want to see in the winter in Maine.

Even with the milder winters we’re having, we still see our fair share of snow, ice, and sleet. But temperatures are warming and we’re not seeing those epic dumps of the white stuff like we used to.

Copy (2) of 006

This used to be a normal February.

009

Tunneling was a way of life.

Now? We get a few inches and it melts.

Then it freezes.

IMG_2751

I am so done with ice.

IMG_2741

Yes, it’s pretty.

IMG_2746

But when walking to the mailbox means you might slip, fall and crack a rib?

IMG_2735

You can have it.

IMG_2734

Give me a foot of snow over pretty shining crystals any day.

IMG_2750

And with all that snow, melting and ice?

This –

IMG_2652

A leak in the roof.

IMG_2653

And what looks like an expensive repair to the ceiling.

It’s the worst possible time of year for it.

So from now until spring, when we can get it fixed, I’m going to cringe every time it rains.

Good times.

If you shovel… they will come.

With apologies to Kevin Costner….

IMG_E9827

I’m talking about the deer.

IMG_E9829

When snow covers the ground and grass is hard to find?

IMG_E9836

Shoveling a path is a sure way to attract a crowd.

IMG_E9832

Or a herd, as the case may be.

IMG_E9837

We were really glad to see our resident 12 point buck survived hunting season.

IMG_E9838

And visits daily with his harem.

IMG_E9839

Of course he also chases them away when the treats run low.

IMG_E9840

Cheeky bugger.

Here’s a little clip in between snow storms.

Boaters beware.

Maine is a quirky place.

The landscape is rugged….

48e1f0597c10cc34ed2c830219446014

And the weather is challenging to say the least.

C7YVV57U0AQlMaE

So we tend to have a sense of humor about most things…

Even road signs.

Like this one I saw the other day.

IMG_5881

Can you read the note to boaters?

IMG_5881 (2)

Attention Boaters!!

Unless your truck and trailer can fly, you can’t get to the boat launch!

Just sayin!

maine

Because apparently… this is a thing.

Chickens.

You all know I like them. You all know my husband is the evil man who won’t let me have them.

(Okay, so in complete honesty he says I can have them… but I have to be the one who goes out in the minus 20 degree winter temperatures to feed, water, and clean the coop in mid January and we all know that’s not happening.)

Yeah… no.

But if I did have them?

I would totally be on board with the latest chicken trend.

IMG_5358

Tutus!

IMG_5369

Chickens…

IMG_5367

In tutus!

IMG_5368

Granted, not all of them look thrilled with the idea.

IMG_5363

And okay, watch out for that one. He looks homicidal….

But chickens in tutus!

It’s a good thing.

Thank you Martha.

I thought you might.

Pink sky at night….

Sailor’s delight.

Pink sky in morning….

Sailors take warning.

IMG_E4220

Our backyard sky Sunday morning.

IMG_E4221

Uh oh.

dc509892fb00d734028e003adebaaf3c

Our weather has been wacky lately.

Bright sun and 55 degrees one day….

Cold, snow and bitter wind the next.

cefced1d225b334fd66d3533f0701b90

Oh well..

We’ll get there eventually.

IMG_4198

But not today….

Me, shoveling Tuesday morning…..

And not really enjoying April.

Come on spring!

r3qdsij

Nothing blooming here but snowflakes…

But that doesn’t mean I can’t import a little now and then.

 As for the upcoming holiday?

I broke the unbreakable. And snow.

I can break anything.

Really. It’s one of my lesser known talents.

You know those cheap Corelle bowls?

The ones you can’t kill?

IMG_E4160

Well…

IMG_4159

I didn’t even have to put it on the stovetop or broiler.

Yay me.

In other news, it snowed.

Again.

To which people in Maine replied….

IMG_4170

A simple reminder that we’ve had enough frigid blasts of white stuff followed by 52 degree days and melting.

Of course, the melting does allow us to participate in the annual derby.

IMG_E4144

The pothole fishing derby.

Loads of fun for the entire family….

But not your car.
