Deer me.

Okay, if you insist.

IMG_2228

I caught a couple of nice shots of our old doe in the field.

IMG_2231

I don’t know how many seasons she’s seen, and the poor thing didn’t even blow her winter coat this year.

IMG_2211

But she comes for dinner every night.

IMG_2248

And brings her kids.

IMG_2224

Whose little Frankenstein nubs always make me chuckle.

IMG_2239

Everyone gets along well.

IMG_2222

Except this one.

IMG_2249

Who sticks his tongue out at woodchucks.

IMG_2230

I guess everyone has a rude child once in a while.

It’s that time again.

Woodchucks!

IMG_2269

Posing in clover.

IMG_2257

Having a healthy snack.

IMG_2205

Kissing.

Or biting, who the hell knows? They’re rodents….. for all I know they’re discussing campaign strategy.

IMG_2289

They love lettuce.

IMG_2325

And since we’ve been flooded with it from our CSA, so have they.

Behold –

IMG_2386

My first photo of momma and 4 babies together.

IMG_2387

She’s down 2 due to fox predation, so the sextuplets are now quadruplets.

IMG_2393

Poor momma.

IMG_2395

She’s fiercely protective, but Mother Nature always has the final say.

Like these quick shots I didn’t have time to focus.

IMG_2286

Do you suppose that starling called Uber….

IMG_2287

And this was what showed up?

We celebrated a most remarkable life.

On Sunday morning we drove up the coast of Maine to say goodbye to a very special man.

The kind of man you meet once in a lifetime.

A humble man so good, so kind hearted and so generous of spirit… his celebration of life had to be held in an airplane hangar.

Was it because he was a pilot?

Maybe, but more likely it was because he touched so many lives no other space was large enough to hold the mourners.

A lifeline to the Islands

I stood in 90+ temperatures (pressed against a wall and wearing a mask) for over 2 hours. I listened to emotionally wrought eulogies…. and saw grown men openly weep when they tried to speak of what Kevin meant to them.

The outpouring of love and respect was almost physical. You could feel it, in the air and in your heart.

When the service was over and four planes from the airline he started, nurtured and bled for flew over in the missing man formation?

Spontaneous applause and not a dry eye in sight.

Fair skies and tailwinds Mr. Waters….

The world will be a lesser place without you in it.

Fog

Fog is such an ethereal thing…. and for me, it’s usually hard to capture a good photograph.

IMG_2342

But the other evening I looked out our front door….

IMG_2349

And the strangest low lying patch of fog had enveloped our farming neighbors.

IMG_2346

We had none at our house across the street.

IMG_2355

But theirs was impressive.

IMG_2345

And as the sun started to set…..

IMG_2351

The colors began to change.

IMG_2348

Orange and yellow fog.

IMG_2352

A beautiful sight.

Country living perks.

We live in a rural area of Maine…. and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Peace and quiet.

Visiting wildlife.

And beautiful scenery.

Some days more than others…

Living across the road from an organic vegetable farm has it’s benefits.

And fresh veggies aren’t the half of it.

Right now, the poppies are in bloom.

Glorious, riotous bloom.

And I’m enjoying every minute of it.

I mean really….

How can you not?

Holy crap!

Yes.

I’m literally going to talk about crap…. and you’re going to wonder why you ever started following me in the first place.

Piles of crap have suddenly begun showing up on our front lawn.

Same spot, by the kitchen door, every morning, totaling 4 piles.

Sorry, I can’t.

Weird as it sounds, we’ve lived here for 18 years and have never had a dog leave a deposit. Ever!

It’s too big for woodchuck or fox. And it’s not skunk. They leave a trail of small black poo nuggets on the driveway.

We have started seeing raccoons late at night, and they do make the rounds.

But I’m thinking coyotes might be setting us up as a rural rest stop.

So if any of my readers are expert scat identifiers?

Now would be the time to weigh in.

*Poop Update –  since writing this the other day.

IMG_4812

The count is up to 5 piles, and since it rained…. closer examination of contents was possible.

(Still with me? You really are loyal readers!)

IMG_4813

Seeds.

I think we can safely rule out coyote now.

Baby squirrel resurgence.

They’re baaaaaaack.

Well, at least the babies are.

IMG_4632

And they’re making themselves right at home on the deck.

IMG_4631

A little too much at home for my liking.

IMG_4622

Because they’re trying to get back into the hole they all came tumbling out of last month.

Cute? Yes.

Respectful house guests? No.

IMG_4634

And then the other day, a friend helped me out.

IMG_4637

No, it’s not the same picture.

Look in the lower right hand corner….

Baby woodchuck is finally earning his keep.

Well done sir.

Carry on.

A woodchuck dump.

Don’t get excited, it’s a photo dump. No one wants to see the other kind.

My files are filled with woodchuck pictures.

IMG_2159

Mother and baby on the rock wall.

IMG_2156

Mother bringing Junior to the back deck.

IMG_2173

Junior checking out the back deck.

IMG_2174

Junior checking out the new grill.

IMG_2203

Two babies on the other rock wall.

IMG_2188

Two babies playing tag.

IMG_2191

Two babies eating apples.

You see how this goes? I flood you with woodchuck photos and you say awww.

IMG_2013

Here’s a woodchuck, a turkey and a duck for variety.

IMG_2195

Momma had 6 babies and I have yet to get them all in one picture.

IMG_2271

But now would probably be a good time to say awww.

IMG_2214

Pandemic humor.

Because if I don’t laugh I might have to hurt someone.

IMG_4108

Add a margarita and it sounds like a plan.

IMG_4592

Because if you won’t wear a mask, why should I wear pants?

And after almost 4 months of doing nothing?

Trust me… you want me to wear pants.

IMG_3099

Ah, Spam. The miracle meat no one wants to eat.

Wait a minute….. do you think they could behind this whole thing?

The virus is a hoax engineered to make people eat 83 year old canned ham!

Or maybe….

IMG_3070

It’s a canine revenge plot.

Either way, we’re stuck with it…

And it’s nice to see Maine stores still have a sense of humor.
