Elizabethan Gardens… Manteo, Outer Banks North Carolina

Next up on our Outer Banks day trip? The Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo.

But first?

Some rocks…

IMG_0795

You’re welcome.

From Nags Head to Manteo?

IMG_0797

Scenery.

IMG_0798

Scenery from a bridge.

IMG_0803

More scenery.

How’s that for detailed description?

IMG_0806

The Gardens were recommended to us as a must stop… so we did. Even though it was off season and very little was blooming.

IMG_0807

Gardens without flowers? Let’s go!

IMG_0809

It was a pretty spot… with lots of different areas to explore.

IMG_0811

They were in the middle of their annual Christmas light show….

IMG_0810

So of course we went in the middle of the day when the sun was shining.

IMG_0813

There was an impressive set of gates.

IMG_0812

Neatly trimmed boxwoods…

IMG_0817

And Queen Elizabeth I.

IMG_0819

There were paths with balls…

IMG_0820

And paths with statues.

IMG_0822

And some extremely large butterflies.

IMG_0825

Funky Christmas lights were everywhere.

IMG_0827

And I’m sure it would have been quite pretty….

IMG_0843

Had we been there at night.

IMG_0829

Okaaaay.

Not sure what that was all about, but I don’t like peas either….. so, huzzah!

IMG_0831

There was a lonely ruin of something.

IMG_0832

And a man shivering in the cold wind.

Oh, wait. That’s the husband…. I didn’t recognize him from the front.

IMG_0837

There were fountains.

IMG_0839

And ass ends of statues.

IMG_0840

Surrounded by tightly trimmed bushes.

Stop snickering…. I know where your mind went.

There were creepy garden gnomes.

IMG_0845

And an indoor butterfly garden…

IMG_0847

With no butterflies.

IMG_0848

But plenty of fluffy gnomes.

IMG_0851

Garden path U turns…

IMG_0853

And yay!

Finally something was blooming.

IMG_0854

There were also the type of Christmas decorations you only see down south.

IMG_0862

Wouldn’t be much point of laying these on the ground up my way.

IMG_0860

But there was an impressive old tree.

IMG_0858

And yes, I do mean old.

IMG_0856

Now that’s a senior citizen!

IMG_0864

More paths…

IMG_0865

More decorations….

IMG_0866

A courtyard….

IMG_0868

A gift shop….

IMG_0873

And a fellow with a wilder hairdo than me after the windy pier.

IMG_0870

By this time we’d looped back around to the beginning.

But not before we learned a few things…

IMG_0874

About bees.

IMG_0875

In case you’re wondering, Maine’s state insect is also the honeybee. Although we designated it as such in 1975.

Long live the bee!

And plagiarism apparently.

Things I don’t like today… Part 4.

I don’t like….

Ordering flowers over the phone for a friend who just had surgery down in North Carolina. I wanted a large, impressive arrangement and was very specific with my request. I said….

No carnation fillers.

All pink and purple.

An interesting vase… definitely no clear glass.

So what did they deliver for $160?

IMG_6109

A clear glass vase, filled with carnations… and a few yellow roses and orange gerber daisies stuck in for no other reason than to piss me off.

$160 worth of everything I didn’t want!

I don’t like….

Ordering a pair of hard to find little batteries from Amazon that fit in an envelope.

IMG_6080

And having it come in a box.

IMG_6079

Talk about overkill.

IMG_6078

I don’t like…

Reading Maine native Stephen King’s latest,

IMG_6133

And realizing he’s lost his touch.

This new book? Meh…

Don’t bother.

I don’t like…

Buying a tin of Altoids to keep in my car,

IMG_6137

Getting them home and realizing…

IMG_6138

They’re slightly past their prime.

2009?

Damn. That’s worse than what I have in the back of my kitchen cabinet.

I don’t like….

My husband getting called into work on a weekend because,

IMG_E6096

Some idiot doesn’t know how to steer his hot air balloon.

Oops!

Baby barn work continues.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about my husband during our long and happy marriage, it’s that he doesn’t like to rush things.

Projects that should take a day, take a week. Projects that should take a week, take a month. Projects that should take a month, well… you get the idea. He’s been working on our big barn for what seems like forever and it’s still not finished.

repaying-student-loan

So our baby barn/shed needs to be torn down and rebuilt. Husband decided the frame of the building and the existing wood on the roof were sound, and is attempting to tear down the rotten parts and rebuild around them.

First off is the old shingles.

IMG_5994

There’s no real reason for this picture other than the fact I love to see a man sweeping.

It’s porn for women.

porn-for-women-book2-640x533

But I digress…..

IMG_5995

Shingles off the front side, tar paper off the lower half.

IMG_6006

Section of roof off… so he can remove the section of wall below.

IMG_6009

It was at this point he decided to level the building.

IMG_6011

And that involved stomping all my flowers into the dirt, which made me….

And run for a trowel.

IMG_E6017

Flowers dug up…

IMG_6015

Potted and moved to the relative safety of the big barn porch.

Of course by the time I’d turned around, he’d stolen bricks and edgers from my garden beds to raise the building.

IMG_6019

Which made me….

And run to gather them up before I was left borderless.

IMG_6039

One new section of wall in place, old section of roof replaced.

IMG_6021

If you’re wondering how long this operation took?

An entire 4 day holiday weekend.

Yes, 4 friggin’ days!

Reason being, my husband is the least organized man on earth and had none of the materials he needed when he started this project and kept having to run to the store… a half an hour away. He can also never find any of his tools and spends 20 minutes cursing and kicking things over looking for them until he gives up and asks me.

Of course he also had to get a haircut, have breakfast with the boys, hit a yard sale, drive an hour to complain to the man who painted his truck last year because it’s already starting to chip, visit his brother, sharpen the lawn mower blades, stop at the pub for a beer and wash his car. Did he have to do all that while trying to rebuild the baby barn?

No. He did not.

But now you see why weekend projects take months.

Fast forward to Monday afternoon. We lay out and cut tar paper…

IMG_6022

While a storm moves in.

IMG_6023

Have you ever tried to lay tar paper on a roof in the wind and rain?

IMG_6024

It’s not fun. Yours truly was on the other ladder and had to put  her phone inside so there aren’t any pictures of me soaking wet and wind blown…. laying across the paper as it was ripping off the roof in a deluge.

Good times.

not

At this rate, I think the project will be done by the time Elon Musk reaches Mars….

Or Richard Simmons stages a comeback.

Stay tuned.

I’m in love…. with a moth.

I know, it’s a little odd.

But if he was visiting your flowers? You’d love him too.

IMG_5956

Meet Herman.

IMG_5957

My hummingbird moth.

He’s been visiting everyday and I’m smitten.

IMG_E5965

Herman is special, and not often seen in these parts.

IMG_E5973

IMG_E5959

I know our love is doomed.

Interspecies relationships rarely work out….

IMG_E5958

But for now, I’ll enjoy every moment we share.

Mystery solved.

Remember a while ago I posted a picture of the sunflower seeds the chipmunk from Hell had planted in my petunias… and how they were growing?

IMG_5502

Well over the past few weeks they grew tall and budded, and then started disappearing. One by one… shredded, stripped of leaves, and gone.

I’ve seen a few grasshoppers, so I thought maybe that was the reason.

IMG_E5817 (2)

How pathetic is that?

One lone stalk remained.

Then I woke up this morning and saw….

IMG_E5817

A woodchuck…

On the table.

IMG_1306

That’s something I hadn’t seen before.

IMG_1305

First there was a little pole dancing….

IMG_1301

Then he got down to business.

So now I know why there won’t be any blooming sunflowers this season.

IMG_1302

He made short work of it and left me this…

IMG_5846

As well as this…

IMG_5847

Yes, I could have yelled and scared him off, but I admit … I laughed instead.

We’ve had woodchucks all year and they haven’t touched a single plant, shrub or flower. Which if you’ve ever had woodchucks, you know is highly unusual.

So I let the little devil have the sunflower.

The fact that he can even get his fat butt up on the table to begin with is comical and worth the price of a sunflower to view.

As my garden grows…

IMG_5492

Day lilies.

IMG_5542

They’re vibrant…

IMG_5541

And colorful…

(Is it me… or is that mildly disturbing?)

IMG_5543

They’re prolific…

IMG_5545

Long lasting…

light bulb

(Well that explains why my refrigerator died. They wanted it to.)

IMG_5499

And easy to care for.

Plant… forget… and enjoy.

IMG_5551

The same goes for Hostas, although they prefer some shade.

Everything is in marvelous bloom right now.

IMG_5893

Except the sunflowers the chipmunk from Hell planted in my petunias.

IMG_5502

They may take a while.

Happy gardening!

A little garden fluff…

(Not to be confused with actually fluffing… because, damn. That’s another blog entirely. )

IMG_5345

The silver mounds are mounding nicely….

IMG_5343

And the red geraniums you all told me to plant? Made the bulkhead doors look even more red…. so, yeah.

IMG_5349

Day lilies are popping up among the peonies.

IMG_5351

As well as in the shadow of the giant quince bush.

IMG_5352

Not sure how that red fellow got in there.

Are there daylily postmen?

IMG_5356

Begonias are begonia-ing.

IMG_5389

And the lawn that never stops growing affords ample opportunity for the neighbors to test drive the husband’s new toy.

IMG_5391

If only they wanted to take more than a few swipes, we could sit on the porch with an adult beverage and enjoy the summer….

Things I like today… chapter 4.

I like…

This road sign we passed on a country lane.

IMG_5232

Notice to salesmen – please move along.

I like…

Sitting on my deck reading,

IMG_5294

And being quiet enough to have a few visitors drop by.

IMG_5295

I like….

This kind of race.

IMG_5292

I might get a little winded…

But at least I know I’ll be able to cross the finish line.

13726835_691638067653620_6038767338939780002_n

I like….

My fruit infuser pitcher.

IMG_5134

I know I should drink gallons of water daily, but let’s face it…unless it’s toning down my bourbon?

I’m not really interested.

IMG_5133

But chop up some fresh strawberries and let it sit overnight?

Quite tasty.

I’ve tried pineapple. Wonderful!

Mango? Meh.

Watermelon? No flavor at all.

Pear seemed like a good idea….

IMG_5132

But it turned brown and slimy in mere hours… so no to pear.

1303214_1

(Don’t worry, it took me a minute to get it as well.)

I like…

IMG_E5300

This picture I took of my flower bed with a triple rainbow shadow.

9r8efh

Alvin’s evil twin.

Chipmunks….

Everyone thinks they’re cute.

Me?

Not so much.

If you think they’re cute, you haven’t met Ervin.

Alvin’s evil twin.

IMG_8745

He taunts me daily.

Digging into my mulch and planting stolen sunflower seeds in every available garden bed.

IMG_0390

He sleeps on the deck furniture..

IMG_0956

And is positively psychotic… staring in at me from the deck.

IMG_1126

And then launching himself in mid air to slam into the window.

Repeatedly.

He’s even made it into the house on occasion.

002

But now…

IMG_0948

He’s discovered the plant pots.

How do I know?

IMG_0950

Aside from the scattered dirt on the table?

IMG_0952

Busted!

The little bastard is now digging and planting seeds in all my potted geraniums, begonias and petunias.

How do I know?

IMG_5355

The large sprouting sunflower leaves are a dead giveaway.

Cute? My ass.

Look at those teeth!

He’s probably plotting to chew off my toe in my sleep if he ever gets back in the house.

Things I like today…. chapter 3.

1.  Peonies!

IMG_5195

Great big colorful, heavily scented blooms.

IMG_5197

If you’ve never smelled one?

I’m sorry.

IMG_5200

They rival roses and lilacs for heavenly natural scent….

And I fill our house with them while I can.

IMG_E5203

The husband’s little nephew used to call them Pee On Me’s.

But either way?

They’re glorious.

I like.

2.  The combination of wine and chocolate?

Always a winner.

wine and choc

But actual wine flavored chocolate?

IMG_5207

Score!

Get yourself some immediately…. you won’t be sorry.

I like.

3.  A bean bag store that stacks their products like an ice cream cone?

IMG_E5286

I like.

4.  Two for one jewelry.

IMG_E5173

Buy a bracelet get a necklace…

IMG_E5174

And they both look good.

It’s true, I can.

Don’t hate me.

I like.

5.  A fox with attitude.

IMG_1009

This one stuck his tongue out at me.

Cheeky little bugger!
