Because I know you were anxiously awaiting it’s return…..

It’s back.

The ongoing baby barn remodeling saga…. and for those of you just joining us? Consider yourself lucky you missed the first 300 episodes.

Winter is over in Maine, we think…. so work has begun anew.

On Saturday afternoon rotted wood was replaced.

IMG_3393

And the silly man I’m married to tried to make everything square.

IMG_3395

Look at him with his little level. Isn’t that cute?

If you remember anything from last year, you’ll know the terms level and square are completely relative when dealing with this nightmare of a building.

Darth

But hope springs eternal, and maybe sometime before we’re through that damned bubble will be in the right position.

IMG_3418

The last of the Zip siding was installed…

IMG_3419

And yes, that’s my husband’s back…. as he refused to smile for my camera.

IMG_3420

I can never quite figure his modus operandi when he works on a project……. and wondered why he made his way from the outside in to meet in the middle.

IMG_3421

This doesn’t usually bode well when you’re using a tongue and groove design.

I  (oh so)  helpfully told him this, but of course he paid no attention because I’m a woman and what do I know?

men

Well, yes.

As a matter of fact he is.

IMG_3427

But when he tried to fit that last piece?

I admit it, I chortled while he cursed.

Which I enjoyed, because really… the world needs more chortling.

IMG_3426

Apparently I did chortle a little too loudly because I also got the look.

Which, after 36 years…. he should know has positively no effect.

IMG_3428

A little trimmed tar paper later and he called it day.

Getting my geek on.

While I’m not a huge television person, I do tend to leave the husband to his own devices at night ( and by this I mean John Wayne and MSNBC, not self gratification )  and curl up in bed with a remote of my own on occasion.

More often than not? I’ll be watching some dry as toast documentary that no one else finds the least bit appealing.

Case in point?

IMG_3127

Yeah…. I loved it.

And if you’re wondering why the husband and I have to watch separate tv’s?

I once made him watch a 4 part series about Kublai and Genghis Khan called  “Mongol Horde… Storm From The East”.  He fell asleep 10 minutes into every episode and still never forgave me.

On my current DVR list?

Forbidden History is my jam.

Juicy secrets from the past….. what’s not to love?

IMG_3125

I just discovered Unearthed.

And have been walking through the Valley of the Kings, marveling over ancient Thebes and reading hieroglyphs from the Temple of Karnak …. in my pajamas.

You can’t beat that with a stick.

IMG_3128

I also record PBS’s Nature.

And now want a pet Pangolin.

I mean really…

How could I not?

Should I be worried?

As a rule, my husband is not a reader.

At work he has to read dry as dust government documents and regulations all day long …. so for relaxation at home? It’s usually mindless television.

He does however keep a steady supply of magazines for perusing while on the throne.

And since my late aunt ran a department at Time/Life, Time magazine has always been a staple.

My question is….

Should I be worried by what he’s reading this week?

The Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine…. A. Wyeth, a fiber crow and some claws.

This is a place I’ve always wanted to visit but never have… so on a rainy, blustery day a while back? We did.

The Farnsworth  is famous in these parts for it’s extensive collection of Maine artists….

IMG_2591

With the Wyeth’s being front and center.

I’ve always liked Andrew, and on the day we visited there was a special exhibit of his work from WW1.

IMG_2586

Art is a strange thing, and totally subjective… so what moves me might leave you flat.

But hey, it’s my blog. My choice.

This simple painting of a helmet filled with pine cones for example.

IMG_2587

You’ll have to pardon the reflections in a lot of these shots…. it’s nearly impossible to avoid with the bright gallery lights and glass.

IMG_2589

While not known for his portraiture…

IMG_2588

This series of photos showing Wyeth at work was quite interesting.

As was the case filled with drawings he did at the age of 8.

IMG_2592

Huh…

I’m pretty sure my 8 year old artwork looked something like this:

Kids-Queen-Mom-Mothers-Day-Portraits-Featured-Image

The next gallery showcased Wyeth’s Maine pieces.

IMG_2596

And trust me, they really capture the feel of our coast.

IMG_2598

There was also a section of these…

IMG_2593

Halloween!

IMG_2597

Which looked much better without the reflection of the paintings from the other side of the room.

IMG_2595

But you get the idea.

IMG_2594

Nothing says Halloween in Maine like a skeletal ship’s captain.

IMG_2602

Making our way through the museum we found a fiber artist….

IMG_2599

Who had some unusual installations…

IMG_2601

Proving that art comes in all shapes and sizes.

IMG_2600

Down the stairs and into the main gallery…

IMG_2604

A tribute to Maine’s agrarian culture…

IMG_2608

And it’s crustaceans.

IMG_2610

Yes, that is a marvelous pile of blown glass lobster claws.

IMG_2605

It should be noted that while I grew up strolling happily around MOMA in New York, the husband has absolutely no tolerance for modern art.

IMG_2606

And I have to admit….. watching him puzzle over what he’s looking at is half the fun of visiting museums together.

IMG_2613

I keep telling him that it’s more important to experience art, to feel it… than to understand it.

IMG_2623

But he just wrinkles his nose and says….

“Yes. But what the hell is it?”

IMG_2611

There were a few  Rockwell Kent  pieces….

IMG_2612

Whose work has sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As well as this:

IMG_2616

A table to draw a self portrait.

IMG_2617

Which made me very glad we hadn’t run into this fellow.

To be continued….

How bored was I yesterday?

Tiptoeing around the house quietly while the husband is teleworking is not my forte, so I tried to find something sedentary and silent to do as not to disturb his process.

Yesterday this involved scrolling through a news feed on my phone.

Sick to death  (no pun intended!)  of the current global health crisis, I found myself reading an article called “Jason Bateman deserves to be taken seriously.”

a7e

Yes.

This is how far I’ve fallen.

And because I realize there might be a few other desperate house bound tiptoers out there?

Here.

Feel free to melt your brain as well.

Biding our time….

In the time of Corona Virus.

Why is it that 3 weeks on vacation flies like the wind, but 3 weeks staying home feels like 6 months?

I know I shouldn’t complain. We’re blessed my husband can work from home and keep a steady paycheck.  But Lord…. what I wouldn’t give for Direct TV to gasp it’s last breath.

My husband is a news hound. Which is mildly annoying any other time… but now?

It feeds the hypochondria he inherited from his mother and his sometimes slightly paranoid nature.

No, I don’t want to hear the new death toll number.

And no, I definitely don’t want to see another Presidential news conference which are anything but.

IMG_2974

If only.

In other news, our stores are still out of toilet paper. And people are posting sightings like it’s Bigfoot…. or something hovering over Roswell, New Mexico.

“There’s a dozen packages of Cottonelle on Aisle 6, Hannaford in Westbrook.”

Go!

“A new shipment of  Charmin on Aisle 10, Shaws in Rockland?”

Hurry!

IMG_2951 (1)

It really is ridiculous.

And makes you wonder what we’re going to do if this trend continues.

Uh oh.

Things my husband does that make me say WTH?

So I went out to the garage a while ago and saw he had moved the snow blower.

And while that in itself isn’t strange…

This was.

truck 1

Huh?

IMG_2666

Yes, that’s a bungee cord with one end hooked to the mirror…..

IMG_2667

And the other end hooked to the blower chute.

It took me a minute to realize he did this due to the limited space on his side of the building.

How limited?

Here’s a shot of the back end.

IMG_2865

Yeah.

IMG_2862

I’d say he had backed up as far as he could.

IMG_2861

The more logical solution of throwing out all that crap treasure not withstanding.

I fear I’ll never catch up…

Which is why I’m posting about Valentines Day at the end of March.

IMG_2765

It started with a nice bouquet of roses….

IMG_2788

And a kitchen selfie before we went out for a late lunch on the water.

IMG_2769

The building used to house a garage… and was previously a wonderful restaurant called, are you ready?

La Garage.

Clever… no?

But now it has new owners and a new incarnation as the Water Street Kitchen and Bar.

IMG_2773

It sits on the Sheepscot River in Wiscasset and please pardon the reflection of my hands in the window.

IMG_2782

We’ve been wanting to try it for a while, and found that’s it’s undergone a major remodel.

IMG_2771

The feel is more modern.

IMG_2781

And I have to say I was loving the metal works installations. This would be perfect for all my husband’s rusty crap treasures!

IMG_2767

But first things first.

IMG_2775

A marvelous basil limeade with a view….

IMG_2768

The menu was small, but seemed alright.

IMG_2777

And just as the waitress brought my (overly salted) charred Brussels sprouts appetizer, the husband saw a friend of his walk in and asked them to join us.

On Valentines Day.

Oh, well.

IMG_2778

This called for two Blueberry Mojitos… .because a girl can only take so much romance.

Husband had a butternut squash soup, which you couldn’t pay me to eat.

squash

And then it was on to a rather dry, garlic-less shrimp scampi for me, and an overcooked paella for the other half.

IMG_2779

The meal was redeemed by dessert.

IMG_2780

A delightful lemon marscapone cake…

Husband’s friends said their meals were good, and the cocktails were lovely so we might give them another try.  We do like the area and supporting small businesses.

IMG_2770

And I might have to take another look at the metal works.

IMG_2774

They really were quite interesting.

Celebrating 36 years of not killing each other…..

IMG_2727

Yes, there’s that as well.

This was the very first picture of us ever taken ….

IMG_2317

Back in 1984, on that awful chair at his mother’s house…… right before we got married. I may look twelve, but no worries. I’d just turned 20. (As for the husband’s hair… I have no idea what was going on there.)

We knew each other for 6 days.

Yes, you read that correctly…. 6 days. And to be honest, 3 of those were the required waiting period for the marriage license.

People thought we were crazy.  (We knew we weren’t.)

Me & Fred, boat

People said it would never last.  (It’s been 36 years.)

Me & Fred, ballfield

The Grateful Dead had it right…..

What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been!

Me & Fred, Harley Rally 2

But I wouldn’t trade a minute of it.

Anyway…. this year on our anniversary?

IMG_2646

A seriously beautiful bouquet from my other half….

IMG_2670

That got better every day as all the blooms opened up.

IMG_2661

The rose colors were gorgeous.

Then it was off to our favorite restaurant in Boothbay Harbor…. before their doors were shut due to the virus.  The decor is nothing to write home about, and the menu is smaller in winter….. but the food is still fabulous.

IMG_2636

As were the seasonal cocktails.

I started with a Ciderberry.

IMG_2638

And moved on to a few Sugar Plums made with this.

OMG!!

If you’ve never payed attention to any of my advice before?

Start now… and buy a bottle.

unnamed

It doesn’t matter if you’re not a fig fan. I actually hate the things.

But this was like nothing I’d ever tasted before. A very unique flavor. I read they also make a Golden Apricot ….. and I’ll be looking for that as well.

IMG_2637

Can’t remember what they called my appetizer but it was delicious, with just the right amount of spice.

Husband went with his usual French Onion soup and a light main dish of broiled haddock and asparagus.

IMG_2639

I, on the other hand….

IMG_2640

Dove into the richest, creamiest most delightful Parmesan risotto you’ll find this side of Italy. It’s one of their specialties and I can never resist…. paired here with pan seared scallops, mushrooms, arugula and a citrus balsamic glaze.

I don’t care how many pounds I gained…

It was worth it!

Ah… spring.

Spring in Maine looks a little different than most places….

Because we woke up to this today.

We didn’t have nearly enough snow this winter, but now? Almost a flippin’ foot fell overnight.

Daffodils and tulips?

Not quite yet.

And because all that heavy wet snow knocked out our satellite feed and someone can’t stand to be without the news for 5 minutes?

Yeah.

This.

At 6:30 am.

Looks like fun, no?

Ah…

Spring!
