Random winter scenes.

.

One of these things is not like the others.

.

.

Which makes me wonder what that poor bird did to be ostracized.

.

.

And speaking of wild turkeys, did you know they make excellent snow shovelers?

.

.

We cleared the path but they’re enlarging the dining room.

And speaking of paths…

.

.

Now that the man cave is being readied, more shoveling is required after every storm.

.

.

Welcome… one and all.

.

.

Aside from the wreaths on our home’s windows, this was the extent of my lackluster Christmas decorating this year.

.

.

Snowflakes lights in the Barn Mahal. Battery powered and on a timer.

Ho! Ho! Hum…

.

.

And while Christmas will feel a lot different this year, there are some things to look forward to.

Mother and Bambi are chowing down regularly and trying to lay on extra winter pounds.

.

But sadly I was right about the blue eyes fading. Once this little one grows up we won’t be able to distinguish him/her so easily.

.

IMG_3602

.

But look who’s made our backyard his new hunting ground….

.

.

A juvenile Coopers Hawk.

He perches on the bird feeder pole and waits patiently for lunch to drop in.

.

.

I got excited when I saw this:

.

IMG_3580

.

And was seriously hoping mother red squirrel had met her doom…

.

IMG_3581

.

But unfortunately it was a dove.

.

IMG_3582

.

Better luck next time guy.

.

What the flock?

.

Birds.

You never know who’ll show up.

.

IMG_3585

.

Turkeys on Thanksgiving Day? That takes balls.

.

IMG_3587

.

They’re even pushing the envelope by ripping up every scrap of weed block landscaping paper I laid under our tree.

.

IMG_3590

.

And blue jays.

.

IMG_3595

.

All of a sudden, a large flock of blue jays.

.

IMG_3596

.

There were blue jays everywhere.

.

IMG_3599

.

And the greedy little devils wiped out four feeders in no time flat.

.

IMG_3592

.

Birds.

Sometimes annoying, but always photo worthy.

.

.

Blog number one thousand two hundred twenty whatever, where River chases turkeys.

.

Wild turkeys. They’re comical and I love to watch them…

.

.

But then they discovered my deer grain pans.

.

.

I chased them, but half heartedly and with ridiculously cringe worthy baby talk.

.

.

But they’re turkeys, so as soon as I walked in the house and looked out the window? This.

.

.

So I chased them again. And that time they stayed gone for an hour… just long enough for me to put out the nightly deer snack.

.

.

While I don’t mind them coming to eat the dropped bird seed and assorted Casa River insects, they’ve figured out the buffet of deer grain, fruit and fox food is laid out at 3:00pm and this might be a problem.

.

.

Foxes and turkeys and deer, oh my.

.

Foxes.

.

IMG_3505

.

Our pair has been absent of late, but now they’re back.

.

IMG_3503

.

Turkeys.

They’ve discovered the deer grain bowl and make short work of it.

Blue eyed Bambi and mom.

.

IMG_3556

.

I hate to say it…

.

IMG_3557

.

But I think his/her eyes are starting to turn brown.

.

IMG_3559

.

I read that could happen.

.

IMG_3558

.

But was hoping he/she would hold on to them a little longer.

.

Giving them the bird.

.

Today the turkeys beat the deer to the buffet.

.

.

Come on mom, I’m hungry.

.

.

Bambi wanted in.

.

.

But was decidedly out numbered.

.

.

Look at mommas face.

She is not pleased.

.

.

But she gives in and tries to approach.

.

.

Nope.

Even when Bambi runs at them they just scatter and regroup.

.

.

Still hungry…

.

.

Bambi finds an alternative source.

.

.

I’m in love!

.

With my husband, yes… of course.

But also with these:

.

.

Gorgeous little masterpieces made with leaves, twigs, blooms and berries.

.

.

Called land art…

.

.

Because as soon as the wind blows?

.

.

They’re gone.

Each of Bullen-Ryner’s pieces comprises locally sourced and foraged materials. Nothing is glued or tethered, which means her work might only last a few minutes before parts begin to fly away with the breeze. So, why does she choose to work this way? “People often ask me why don’t I make something more permanent or they say it’s such a shame that it’s temporary,” Buller-Ryner shares. “But for me, it is the ephemeral nature of what I do that has become like therapy for my soul. I get to put down all my anxieties, my fears, all the chaos from my brain and turn it into something beautiful to honor Mother Nature. I take some photos and then walk or cycle away, leaving it all behind and feeling calmer, more connected, and truly lighter.

Such beautiful little treasures.

.

.

Yes.

.

.

I’m definitely in love.

.

.

Admit it….

.

.

You are too!

.

I have questions.

.

My first question is why I even bother going to Wal Mart in the first place? For a store that claims to have everything, they rarely… if ever… have what I need.

Bird seed?

.

.

Nope.

Is there a new Covid 19 shopping panic I don’t know about? Are preppers stocking their bunkers with sunflower seed and suet now? I mean really… every single time I go Wal Mart… specifically for bird seed… the shelves are bare. It’s beyond annoying.

While I was there this time I also looked for individual au gratin baking dishes, because ya know… River needs to bake some fancy fish.

Nope. Couldn’t find any.

The rude gum smacking purple haired helpful sales associate I finally tracked down and asked told me there was no such thing… but I could find the potatoes on aisle 12.

.

.

Sheets?

Our niece wanted some flowered ones for her dorm room… but Wal Mart said no can do.

.

.

Flowers?

Forget about it. Plain grey, beige and navy. It was the same blah color scheme of that furniture store I visited a while back. And hey, I understand trends as much as the next girl… but what happened to something for everyone?

Feeling totally discouraged, I searched for one more thing.

A simple thing. A thing surely every Wal Mart in America carries.

A sweatshirt for the husband…

But did I find one?

I think you know the answer to that.

There was one lone sweatshirt in the men’s department. A size small… in bright red.

* note to Wal Mart stockers – get with the program! It’s Maine. We need bird seed, sweatshirts and fancy fish bakers. *

.

.

All present and accounted for.

.

It’s turkey season.

.

IMG_3396

.

And that doesn’t bode well for our fine feathered visitors.

.

IMG_3402

.

Momma brought her seven babies for their first nosh under the bird feeders a few months ago…

.

IMG_3408

.

And they’re all still with her.

.

IMG_3412

.

You go momma.

.

IMG_3423

.

They’re comical birds to watch.

.

IMG_3424

.

Like big brown chickens who gobble instead of cluck.

.

IMG_3419

.

Though her babies are almost full grown, momma is still vigilant…

.

IMG_3426

.

And takes off at the slightest perceived threat.
