Because even turkeys get cold.

Our local feed store is a delightfully quirky place.

Owned and operated by a wonderful man who shares our love of critters, I always look forward to shopping there.

Case in point….

When a turkey chick failed to sell last year because it had a deformity of it’s wing? He adopted it.

The bird is now large, spoiled silly and something of a feed store mascot.

When the temperature drops to near freezing?

She comes inside and stays by the wood stove…

Because even turkey birds get cold.

Please note there are two chickens under the table as well.

I love my town!!

Jamestown Re-creation…. the settlement, some rusty tools and a cocktail tease.

IMG_2284

The first settlement in America looked something like this.

IMG_2266

And I have to admit the buildings were larger than I thought they’d be.

IMG_2271

This was the church.

IMG_2272

And I swear it’s bigger than the one in my town today.

IMG_2274

I loved the thatched roofs on the cottages.

IMG_2276

And we enjoyed poking around inside them.

IMG_2275

Some of them were simple.

IMG_2278

Some a little more grand.

IMG_2279

Check out the armor on top of the cupboard.

IMG_2280

Nothing like some weaponry over the dining room table to get the gastric juices flowing.

IMG_2268

Speaking of that…. there was an armory.

IMG_2269

And it doesn’t matter how many times I see these, I still can’t imagine having to wear them into battle. I mean damn, they make my underwire bra look positively comfortable in comparison.

IMG_2267

Needless to say the husband was loving all the old tools and farm implements.

IMG_2286

Yes dear….

IMG_2282

Rusty metal…. I see it.

The last building we checked out was a communal kitchen.

IMG_2295

And you know what I found… right?

IMG_2290

Wandering at will….

IMG_2294

Hoping something would fall off the table.

IMG_2296

There were also fake cocktails, which is a rude tease to those of us who happened to be thirsty.

Hell, if these fell off the table they’d bounce.

And that’s not my type of cocktail at all.

c4c417c363e1b2125758b712026cf025

Okay.

Now we’re talkin’….

Day 14…. The Jamestown Settlement Re-creation. A photography ban, some chickens, and a salty character.

This was the day we explored the Jamestown Settlement which is part museum and part living history re-creation.

IMG_2204

The museum section was large….

IMG_2196

But immediately pissed me off with the no photography allowed rule. (I took this one just because I’m ornery.)

We’d spent the last 2 weeks visiting museums filled with amazing artifacts and fine art, but this…. fake trees and cheesy dioramas…. was off limits? Go figure.

Okay….

Fast forward to the full immersion cinema we were learning were common in these parts.

IMG_2198

Admittedly, when you’re there?

It’s pretty cool.

Especially when the smoke starts rolling along the floor.

Finished with the film, we headed outside.

IMG_2205

Past whatever this was.

IMG_2206

And into a Native American village.

IMG_2207

It was basically the same thing we’d seen at Plymouth Plantation earlier this year.

IMG_2208

Except there were no bare chested young Indian men to chat with.

Boo to that.

IMG_2211

There were more huts.

IMG_2212

And a couple of people making baskets.

IMG_2210

And of course, because I find them everywhere…

IMG_2215

Chickens.

IMG_2216

Aggravated roosters…

IMG_2218

And fluffy butted hens.

IMG_2221

Next up was the harbor…

IMG_2222

And the reconstructed vessels that brought the first settlers from England.

IMG_2240

We toured the deck.

IMG_2227

The husband chatted up a crew member.

IMG_2231

We toured down below.

IMG_2235

Where accommodations were small….

IMG_2236

And pretty basic.

IMG_2237

Unless you were the cook.

IMG_2239

Who got his own room.

Of course it was also the kitchen, so there is that.

IMG_2234

The husband chatted up another crew member.

IMG_2247

And we enjoyed the views.

IMG_2257

While marveling at how more than a hundred people could travel together for months on end in these small spaces.

IMG_2262

And mind you, we were on the large ship.

IMG_2241

The whole time were touring?

There was a soundtrack….

He was quite a character.

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum.

This was what I’d come to see.

IMG_2086

And with a nod to Abe, we entered.

IMG_2099

By definition:

Colonial Williamsburg museums…. Folk Art tree, vintage weapons, furniture and an 18th Century catwalk.

There are two distinct collections in what used to be the lunatic asylum building… The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum.

It’s a bit fluid when you enter…

IMG_2049

And since it was the Christmas season I wasn’t surprised to see one of these.

Please note there’s a chicken instead of an angel on the top. I’m not sure what that means, other than there might be a secret cult of barnyard fowl practicing nearby. Which lead me to Google image search ‘religious chicken’ and then I was off….

d7uytq-80cf788a-0523-4fc1-ad95-e9574010bee4

Yes….

chicken

I’m easily distracted… but you have to admit,

w40f9yyu3gc41

This architect had a sense of humor.

And now back to your regularly scheduled program:

IMG_2047

The story behind it was interesting.

IMG_2053

Me like.

IMG_2052

Though I doubt I’ll be making my own or buying the book.

IMG_2054

And opposite the festive tree?

IMG_2051

Implements of death….

IMG_2057

Because nothing says holiday cheer like various ways to kill each another.

IMG_2055

But even I have to admit they were beautiful specimens.

IMG_2056

And if you look closely, you can see the scowling face on the bottom of the grip.

I read the DeWitt has the largest collection of southern furniture in the world…

IMG_2072

And I believe it.

IMG_2075

There were rows and rows of unique examples.

IMG_2081

There were also some fabulous fashions of the day.

IMG_2082

And yes…

IMG_2079

Shoes!

58a54a873f8dea9485d1e0f14777f798--bride-shoes-disney-weddings

And if that wasn’t wonderful enough… there was 300 year old fabric.

IMG_2078

And a vintage runway.

Those little harlots.

Did you see how much ankle she was showing?

Shameless!

Revolutionary Museum finale…. a farm, some fowl, and a few gag worthy recipes.

The end of our living history tour was a typical Yorktown, Virginia farm of 18th century.

IMG_1609

It re-creates the life of Edward Moss,  and you can read a little about it  here.

IMG_1608

The house was simple, but comfortable enough for the time…

IMG_1611

Or so Edward told us.

IMG_1610

There was a separate building for cooking… where they were currently following old recipes and baking pies.

IMG_1612

Apparently you used to be able to sample the food, but the health department put the kibosh on that and now you can only drool.

IMG_1615

And although the pie smelled great, I can’t say I’d be too eager to try any of these recipes.

IMG_1618

Calf’s head surprise…?

No.

IMG_1616

Transmogrified pigeon?

Yeah…  I’ll pass on that as well.

I did get a kick out of this spice jar stopper though.

IMG_1613

As promised….

IMG_1647

Some chickens.

IMG_1620

Because no matter where I go, I tend to find fowl.

IMG_1622

There was candle making.

IMG_1624

And slave quarters.

IMG_1625

Complete with….

IMG_1626

You guessed it.

Shoes.

IMG_1635

There was a tobacco drying shed, because back then tobacco equaled money.

IMG_1633

And if you’ve never had occasion to be in one?

IMG_1634

Trust me… it smells wonderful.

IMG_1644

A few more buildings…

IMG_1645

A lot more fencing…. and we were done.

IMG_1639

Well…

IMG_1641

After I said goodbye to the resident ducks.

IMG_1640

I do love me some waterfowl.

The resort condo, the coffee shop, free chicken coffee…. and as always, geese.

After touring the Manor House of the Historic Powhatan Resort in Williamsburg, I knew our condo would be a bit of a letdown, but as timeshare units go…. it was quite decent.

IMG_0012

We requested a top floor, since the husband despises people tap dancing above him at 2:00am.

                   Our previous upstairs neighbors

It was a 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit…

IMG_9990

And like many of the newly renovated suites we’ve had lately….  heavily yellow and beige-d.

nifty-shades-of-beige_o_1799643

IMG_0002

But the king size bed was extremely comfortable….

IMG_9991

There was a working fireplace…

IMG_9989

A full kitchen with hardwood floors and granite countertops….

IMG_0006

Large bathrooms…

IMG_0003

A full size dining table….

IMG_9993

And a place for evening cocktails.

IMG_9994

The buildings were well spaced and far enough apart to limit noise, which is a plus for light sleepers like me.

IMG_0001

Heck, this condo was almost 1,400 square feet…. which is about 300 more than our first home, so I wasn’t complaining.

funny-meme-about-millennials-being-able-to-buy-houses-but-they-can-only-buy-small-houses

We unpacked, or rather I did. Husband just threw his suitcase on the bed and called it good. What is it with you men?

Then we decided to grab a quick bite at the on site coffee shop.

IMG_0064

It was next to the Manor House, and attractive in it’s own right.

IMG_0028

With a large outdoor seating area….

IMG_0030

And a view of the ever present geese.

IMG_0031

Unfortunately…

IMG_0035

It also had a big fat closed sign next to it’s front door.

IMG_0026

First the bad restaurant, then the shut up tight coffee shop. Clearly it wasn’t our day for eating out.

So we ended our first day in Williamsburg at the grocery store, stocking up for the 2 weeks ahead and wondering why no one was taking advantage of the free chicken coffee.

IMG_0087

Buy 2, get 3 free?

I don’t drink the stuff… but geesh.

How bad can it be to still be filling the shelves? The packaging alone should be worth the price of two.

funny-cat-fluffy-bird-fabulous

The resort, the Manor, a little bad food…. and geese.

There aren’t too many timeshare resorts that have a Manor House…

IMG_0068

But ours did.

IMG_0066

And for guests….

IMG_0072

The doors were wide open.

IMG_0037

So before even finding our condo, we explored.

IMG_0048

She was a charming old girl.

IMG_0046

And fully decked out for Christmas.

IMG_0049

Yes, there was even some funky chicken portraiture.

IMG_0052

Ya gotta love that.

IMG_0045

Traditional Williamsburg colors took center stage.

IMG_0051

And board games were set up on various tables.

IMG_0063

It really was quite lovely.

IMG_0060

And I certainly wouldn’t mind having a meal or two here.

IMG_0061

But we were burning daylight…

IMG_0053

So, needing liquid refreshment….

IMG_0038

We left the Manor House and were pleased to find a restaurant/bar on the property.

IMG_0075

Not all resorts have this, so it was a plus.

IMG_0077

The friendly bartender introduced the husband to a local beer, and we ordered some appetizers to test the menu.

IMG_0079

French Onion Soup for the other half…. which was absolutely horrendous. Croutons instead of French Bread, over salted broth and a glob of gelatinous cheese.

Blech.

IMG_0078

My margarita was made with cheap mix and even cheaper tequila…. and the cheesy crab dip? Tasteless, as well as crabless.  I couldn’t find a single piece.

Needless to say we passed on ordering dinner there. (Sorry Martin, that’s all the food pics you’ll get today.)

But ya know what?

The resort was beautiful.

They had a Manor House…..

IMG_0040

And geese.

IMG_0092

I forgave them their bad food.

Cape Cod Day 6… Sandwich Glass Museum oddities.

Day 6 found us in getting a late start in Sandwich.

map 19

At a museum filled with glass.

IMG_9351

For 62 years beginning in 1825, Deming Jarvis’s glass factory put this little Massachusetts town on the map.

IMG_9306

The history of glass was on display…

IMG_9307

And some of it was fascinating.

IMG_9308

Parts of the museum are interactive…

IMG_9313

And we timed it just right to witness a glass blowing demonstration…

IMG_9315

Which I thought I’d videoed, but apparently didn’t.

IMG_9350

Either way, the chandelier hanging overhead was impressive. Though I’d hate to have to dust it.

IMG_9333

Glass..

IMG_9334

Glass.

IMG_9332

And more glass.

Well, what did you expect…

Yes!

IMG_9323

Chickens!

IMG_9324

Lots…

IMG_9325

And lots of glass chickens.

IMG_9327

Clearly they knew I was coming.

IMG_9343

They were salts…

IMG_9344

And paperweights…

IMG_9347

Art glass…

IMG_9348

And breast pipes.

Yes.

IMG_9349

There was even a bosom shell….

Which I’m sure was very comfortable.

a5bfb957463ff4985ed03aba3e257aaa

There was also a lily foot shoe..

IMG_9340

And the chance to have dinner with a dead man.

Who could pass that up?

White Mountains trip Day 6… rock lovers rejoice.

What do you do when you wake up to a rainy morning and you’re on vacation in Bethel?

IMG_8146

You visit the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum…

IMG_8148

Where it’s all about the rocks!

No, really…. it will be great.

IMG_8107

Before we even made it inside there were awesome rocks.

IMG_8108

Folded marble? Who doesn’t love that…

IMG_8109

And check it, pink girlie rock!

I knew this was going to be good…

So you can imagine my disappointment when we discovered the museum was undergoing renovations and only had one room of rocks open to the public.

One room?

IMG_8112

Okay, there was the Maine state fossil.

IMG_8114

And one seriously freaky fish.

IMG_8115

But….

But…

Only one room of rocks?

IMG_8117

Even a chicken sighting didn’t cheer me up.

IMG_8120

There weren’t nearly enough fossils.

IMG_8119

Or gems  and minerals to satisfy me.

IMG_8122

But there were some pretty cool space rocks.

IMG_8123

And they were certainly out of this world.

imagesXXVJCOEL

Some of them didn’t even look real.

IMG_8124

But they’d make a fantastic kitchen countertop all the same.

IMG_8126

Moon rocks rock…

IMG_8125

But actual martian rocks?

IMG_8128

Disappointingly dull…

The final case held Maine tourmaline.

IMG_8129

Hugely popular for jewelry up here.

IMG_8130

And in honor of our visit…

IMG_8133

I had worn my pair of raw Kyanite bracelets.

IMG_8132

Do I know how to coordinate or what?

A few polished balls later…

IMG_8142

And all too soon…

IMG_8139

We were done.

IMG_8143

We’d seen all there was to see.

IMG_8137

Except for the gift store…

IMG_8144

Which had some absolutely fabulous jewelry!! With absolutely fabulous prices… and the husband couldn’t get me out of there quickly enough.

IMG_8145

But if they ever finish the renovation, I’d go back.

IMG_8150

One can never see too many rocks.
